I thought I would try yogurt as a treat this morning. I did use plain, the same that I eat. I placed a little bit on a plastic lid and put it in the brooder and I got a few willing to try that went immediately went over and wiped off their beaks and then decided that since it obviously wasn't edible they would walk in it instead. So now I have a brooder full of silkie looking large fowl with pine chips stuck to their feet. Hahaha

So is there a flavor that works better or do I just have a brooder full of non-yogurt eaters? Acquired taste possibly?

It took a while for my chicks to warm up to yogurt. I always use plain yogurt (something unnatural sounding about flavored yogurt and chickens, LOL). I think I offered it 2 or three times before they caught on. I KNOW that they caught on before the first container was empty.

But, once they caught on that it was food, they ATTACKED it. Could just be the age of your chics? I think mine were about 4 weeks or so before I gave them yogurt.

Good to know. They are only 2.5 weeks old. They have acquired a taste for itty bitty baby crickets since some must have made it into the bathroom and I had baby chicks running around trying to eat them. Very funny to watch.

Mine refused to even try it the first few times.

The day before yesterday, I used the metal round cake pan that I put their watermelon in. They recognized that and tried the yogurt. Immediately, it was a feeding frenzy! I also mixed the yogurt with some oatmeal (uncooked) however, my chickens have grit as well. I'm new, but understand they shouldn't get oatmeal without grit...

Should I be giving them grits before I give them yogurt? Maybe I'm doing this at too young an age? What age do you start giving grits?

i always put oatmeal in with the yogurt... it seems to give them something to grab onto when they're trying it. Oh, and often they're afraid of new treats... I just leave it with them and low and behold a few hours later, there's nothing left.

Mine love there's with strawberries and bananas esp when I leave chuncks of each also blue berrys mine have been on yogart from just few days old when my little bit was not doing too good

Its ok, my chicks think yogurt is some kind of killer chicken toxin. They are very young though, only 9 days old. The ones that tried it acted like it was possibly the worst thing they've ever tried. I figured I'd give it another go around in a few weeks. I may try freezing it in ice cube trays too so they can peck at it.

Trifecta, That's how mine acted. They kept wiping their beaks off and just started walking in it. I did take it out. Maybe a few baby crickets would make it more appealing? :>))

What is the average age everyone started giving it?
