One of our chickens laid the first egg of our first flock this morning!

We noticed something that we hadn't expected when we found the egg. It was surrounded by a yolk-y looking liquid. At first we thought the chickens had smashed the egg, but when we pulled it out the egg looked fully intact and perfectly normal. We haven't cracked it yet, so not sure what the inside looks like. I searched to see if this was a common thing for first time layers but couldn't really find anything. Anyone else experience this?

What you're seeing: The chicken had 2 eggs in her oviduct. One completed the process and got a good shell. The other one traveled too fast and did not get any shell, may not have even gotten any membrane. Both eggs were expelled at the same time. Sometimes it takes a new layer a bit of time to get the conveyor belt tuned up and running at the right speed.

Thanks for the insight! That makes sense. Guess we'll see if the same thing happens with the rest of the flock once they all start laying.

I just picked up two green eggs that were covered in yolk. Another green egg was laid on the other side of the coop.

I have 3 green egg layers in the coop right now. One hen rarely lays, but maybe all three laid today. Who knows?

The funny thing is, these two eggs with the yolks were laid within the same hour, were right next to each other, and were uniformly covered in yolk. It almost looks like they were laid by the same hen, but I know that's virtually impossible.

Supporting that impossible notion is the fact that they were uniformly covered in yolk, almost as if they hen had 3 eggs in the oviduct, laid two, and an eggless yolk splatted on the two shelled eggs.

I'll never know what happened, and my head hurts, and I'm not sure this makes sense. I just wanted to have my little, weird, green eggs and yolk story somewhere.
