I have a chick that was born this morning and he had a long bloody umbilical cord with yolk at the site of the navel. It just keeps coming back out and I can tell it's yolk. Never seen this. I put some corn starch on it to stop it. Can someone tell me what to do? Is the baby going to die? Thanks

Thanks for the link. This chick totally hatched himself. No assistance. I noticed the gooey blood on the incubator mat and saw he had the bloody long umbilicus. When I managed to get him out it just kept coming, and oozing out. It was the yolk. I just knew I had to stop it so I used the corn starch. This morning i thought it was dried, and stupidly washed him and it came off and started oozing again. Put more corn starch on him and am waiting.

I had one hatch in spring with probably 1/3 of the yolk not absorbed. I popped him in an egg cup for the morning and waited. Once the the sac dried out I cut it off 1/2 inch from the tummy . The chick wasn't looking very well so I fed him poly aid plus with probiotics ( baby bird formula ) and he came good in a couple of days. If you have an antiseptic or antibiotic wound spray like Terramycin or vetericyn I would apply that to the area in an attempt to prevent infection.

Thanks for your help. I'm watching him and get the feeling he is just not right. He won't eat or drink and so i put his little beak in the water nd he swallowed, but won't try to peck at the food. He does a lot of crying. Looks like his head is way to big for his body and he won't keep his eyes open. I hate this so much, it hurts to see him this way. We found one in the shell dead. It hadn't absorbed it's yolk. One egg still has lots of blood veining in it, but it is moving. What would cause a chick to die in the shell without absorbing the yolk? Thanks again

They can go 12-24 hours without water or food after hatch, so long as they absorb the yolk. You may need to get some baby parrot formula to get it started and it also encourages them to eat. If not some soft just cooked scrambled egg. I find that just dipping my finger in the water and trickling it down the beak works .
Best you can do now is keep it warm and dribble a little water every hour or so . Give it a little teddy to cuddle up to.
