So one of our hens that we got a few months ago and started laying not long after, was laying.. I would say “large” eggs.. according to grocery stores.... but now she’s laying EXTRA LARGE eggs... like, bigger than my ducks eggs. None of my other hens lay nearly as large of eggs and she seems fine, health and happiness wise; but I’m worried it could be painful for her and it could be because of something I’m not doing right? Maybe I’m just paranoid. This is my 2nd year with chickens so I’m definitely still a newbie. I just want to make sure I’m not the cause of it.. if I am, I for sure want to fix it! So any advice is welcome . They’re all free-range with access to chicken feed and any healthy scraps (treats?) I can give them. Not sure of her breed, she is more red colored than the others that are supposedly “Easter-Eggers”, and she is young, just started laying 2-3 months ago. I attached two photos - one of her and the other of one of her recent eggs compared to my large duck egg.

If they are all the same chicken breed you could have a double yolked egg. Silkie hens are a hair over 1 pound(smaller egg) the larger one is from one of my 5 pound Sumatra. I wouldn't worry it hurts though. Don't think we are dirty from the hair on the floor, we have 4 indoor/outdoor dogs you can sweep that stuff up daily and still find it freshly laid. Guess a roomba would help with that.

I know this is post is a few months old, but I have the same thing happening with one of my hens that looks similar to yours. She’s not even a year old and she lays huge eggs compared to the other hens her age. I’m wondering if it’s breed specific?

My older hen laid me a dinosaur egg a while back, so I did a ton of research. Just starting laying or just ending laying cycles can cause abnormal sized eggs. Also some chickens just have a tendency to lay larger eggs. I have one that lays what could be compared to double yolkers quite often but not always. I would not worry.
