You know you love your chickens when...

I just wanted to thank all of yall for your understanding how my wife and I are basically...mournin for our hen Tippy having passed. She truly was a sweet little hen. Your kind words are making it better. She come home from work the other day upset on account of how people'd given her this look like she was crazy after they'd asked her whats wrong and she'd answer she was sad because our hen had been but to sleep. One of her coworkers even said "it's just a chicken"
But all of yall...THANK YOU for having a heart. Making this a little easier to take.

They're NOT 'just' chickens to those of us who have spent so much time raising and caring for them. I bawled for more than two weeks when we had to put my dog down due to the cancer that had made his life unbearable. And I grieved over just giving two of my hens away even though I knew I was giving them a chance at a better life. I guess I have a soft spot for innocent animals. Not so much for insensitive humans. Sorry for ranting.

When you lose a beloved member of your family, you grieve. It doesn't matter what species that family member belongs to be it human, dog, fish, or chicken. My sincerest condolences on your loss of Tippy.

You know you love your chickens when........you see one is missing some feathers on her back and you make sure you take extra time to put blue kote and an apron on her even thought your already running late on leaving for work.

x2 to what @Raggedyroad , @CoopDeGrass , @Jensownzoo , @yochickiemomma , and everyone else have said. The wonderful thing about BYC is that it is a place where all will understand how you feel about your beloved birds, and you are safe from hurtful words like "It's just a chicken."

On that topic, you know you love your chickens when you take some eggs to a dinner party to contribute to a poached egg dish, and when the host adds a store-bought egg to the pot where yours are cooking, you cannot help yourself from proudly pointing out how much larger and more beautiful the yolks of your girls' eggs are. Even though you know everyone there is rolling their eyes, and you will probably not be invited back.

That made me laugh out loud, because that is so me...hahahahaha. I made deviled eggs with our fresh eggs at Thanksgiving and found myself saying "Look how yellow those yolks are! Don't they taste better? Don't they? Huh?"

And along witheveryone else on this post, my family and friends (especially the Facebook variety) feel compelled to send me every chicken picture the internet holds. And I laugh and thank them even though I've seen it a hundred times from someone else.

Even worse is my reaction when reading that. I went "oh no! putting that nasty store-bought in with the "good" eggs" I was anticipating that you'd snatch the pot away and go "DON'T!" LOLOLOLOL

I also made deviled eggs for Thanksgiving at my mother-in-laws request. I said pretty much the same thing and most of them DID roll their eyes. I just chuckled. Those that don't own chickens could never understand. I will say that my mother-in-law is very fascinated with my hens and comes to visit more than she did before I started raising them. I can't imagine life without chickens.
