You know you love your chickens when...

Being with them and watching them is calming and relaxing - several times a day I go to the window and just watch them pecking around the grass. Just stand and watch....and smile.

It's almost mezmerizing and by far one of the best things I've ever done is to raise chickens. I just love when they see me at the window putting on my farm boots and they all come a running. My hubby swears they read my mind, he says they act like I'm coming before they see me.

...your girls start laying this week, and you buy a huge bunch of organic chard to feed them as a special treat (it was only after I bought it that I realized I could also maybe make an omelet for myself, too

I think my chooks look hilarious when they run.

Me too! One of mine has a little game she plays with me where she waits until I am cleaning out the run and then makes a point of stopping whatever she is doing in the yard, coming back to the run, and running straight through it so she can go right past me, and she honks at me like a goose when she runs past because she is so excited. It is so funny and cute.

“Funny and cute” pretty much sums up chickens … how could we not love them???

After a not so good day at work yesterday, the girls started demanding to be let out at 03:15pm, 45 minutes before I was due to finish. I spent those 45 minutes chuckling at some of the noises they were coming up with, including attempts at crowing.

Then, when they were let out, their excitement was contagious; I challenge anyone to not smile while watching them in the garden.

When I sat down in the normal spot to dole out treats, Dusty found herself alone on the other side of the garden, realising what was happening she came racing across the lawn, little chicken legs flying out to the side like some supercharged turtle.

Then KiKi and Crystal were eating some lettuce together from the bowl .. even though there was heaps there, Crystal must have taken a piece that KiKi wanted because KiKi took it straight out of her beak.

KiKi wanted a drink which, of course, meant Crystal was thirsty, then Cilla was thirsty and then they all were thirsty!!

I asked each of them how they were doing and if they had a good day .. they all nattered away to me and I so wish I knew what they were telling me.

Bad day at work?? What bad day at work?? Gone and forgotten!

... when you feel mortally wounded and are considering a break-up when your SO tells you he hates those darn chickens!
