You might be a “Southie” if...

Not at all. Very different scientific definitions. One must be ingested/injected, one is injection only. If Alaska is not northern, then there is no northern. I lived in the northern most town you can get in the US. Barrow/Utqiagvik Alaska.

As a layman a venomous snake is poisonous...

All I need to know is it can kill me...

Ak is a weird state. South of Anchorage is definitely Southie area, north of Anchorage is considered “the VWN annex”.

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE ALLIGATORS!?!?!?
When I move to Mississippi, I am going NOWHERE near any water. Ever.
If you stay in saltwater, your pretty safe from alligators. They mostly stay in fresh and brackish water. I live on the gulf (west) side of south Florida and you never hear of sharks here. I see lots of dolphins, manatee, and sea turtles but no sharks! Ooops...forgot to mention the panthers, but maybe that’s just here in Florida since there is a panther reserve here. I was a bit freaked out over these signs at first, but have never seen one in the three years that I’ve lived here.

Louisiana beaches are cesspools...they are only good for fishing and every year they cause at least a handful of cases of flesh eating virus!
I’ve been here 21-22 years now & “we” only need water deep enough to use the snorkels in the 4-wheelers...and that means SWAMP! LoL! The first time I did a midnight ride, I thought I was scarred for life by all the things I saw swimming away from us......then came the part where some of us girls had to find a potty spot. I remarked that I hoped I wouldn’t step on an alligator. What I expected was some type of response like, “Nah. There aren’t any gators around us” or something to that effect. Was I was told (very matter of factly) was, “Nah, you won’t step on a gator, you’ll hear it hiss way before you get close enough to step on it”!!!!!! I didn’t have to pee after that, I didn’t care if my bladder exploded!!!!

I have never seen an okra plant before... Now that I have seen one, I would describe it as a cactus flower stuck onto some weird mutant greenbean-jalapeno mix. Is that what they taste like? Seriously though, I've never tried okra and now I am curious...
I may offend my Northern brethren but I have grown okra and I am planting it again this year. I think the blooms look like Old Fashioned Hollyhock blooms!

I remember seeing Okra plants in FL and thinking they were really strange hibiscus. I was surprised as a young adult to learn they were a food crop. 🤷‍♀️ Okra is the seed pod of that pretty flower. The thing people usually object to in okra is that it is very mucilaginous. Oddly it is this characteristic that makes it so helpful in a gumbo as it adds body. It's also very healthful (the mucousy stuff) for some reason I have long ago forgotten.

But yes, unless you fry it so crisp that the mucous is no longer a factor and it tastes like any other fritter, it does take some getting used to.
Pickled Okra is AWESOME!

A post on another thread reminded me of a pure Southie thing...

You might be a Southie, if you have to wonder if that snake you see is poisonous...

The land of the Northerners is poisonous snake free!
You also might be a Southie if you come to Minnesota for a visit and think a Bull moose is a cow. This really did happen when my brother married a Southie from Mississippi and her brother came for a visit and saw a Bull Moose for the first time.😄
