You might be a “Southie” if...

I think people who say that have never spent the winter up here.
There is really no way to explain a cold that’s so cold your lungs hurt to breathe.

However, they have never felt the joy of fishing all day without a mosquito anywhere around, also.

I have not had to deal with Mosquitos, gnats or biting flies in over 4 months.

North-ies What happens to your chickens when it’s below zero? We are forecast to to -6º this weekend.

My rooster has some slight darkening on his wattles. I close the pop door in the evening and don’t open it until it’s warmed up to ten below, like mid morning. I have a heat plate on the wall behind the roost. He may lose some points this week. If I could touch him without getting my face ripped off I’d put some coconut oil on the comb and wattles. The girls are doing good. I gave them some mash slightly warmed with water and bacon grease awhile ago and locked them in.

I lock them up inside the coop. No point in leaving the pop door open for the cold North wind, they mostly won't come outside anyway. The windows let in the sun, and they dust bathe in the shavings.
I avoid any birds with large single combs and stick with small single or pea combs, which pretty much eliminates frostbite issues.

I think I hear the gentle sounds of Southies whining. :lau

We reach 100 most summers for a day or two, we reach 90 a couple days too. I try to spend those days soaking in a lake or lying in front of the AC.

Now whiners take note:

It was just the right temp to hurt my lungs when I breathed in while accompanying Haylee on her morning poop.

We will not see above zero for a week or more.
