'You people' and your forum!

Uhmm, don't you mean "WE people"?

You may want to do a board search on "Chicken Math" because buddy you've got it!

Has your five year old ever seen eggs in the process of hatching? Incubating your own is a sure kid magnet...
He hasn't and we're planning on hatching some out next spring for him. We figure a year of experience with our current flock will give us some valuable experience before we try a hatch. I'm planning on adding a couple more chickens to show him some genetics stuff - (it gives me an excuse to add a naked neck!), and want the hatch to go as well as possible. This forum has been a load of information, and hopefully all of my emergencies are vicarious learning experiences, but a 'year in the life of a chicken' will hopefully help in case something arises in my own backyard flock.

Bowen, you're not far from me. I have Silkies....white Silkies....

I could part with maybe 2 of them.....if you would like them...free of charge...you would just have to come get them..They are only a couple months old. Ya know...not that I'm trying to enable you or anything...nah...I'm not doing that...

Wow, they have internet in Forest Hill, WV?!? (joking!) My dad's parents were from that area - Sandstone/Hinton, and my mom's a bit further down the road - Lockbridge/Meadowbridge. Pretty much all of the family that way is long gone, although I still get to Hinton on occasion for a nostalgic day trip or such: Sandstone falls, the DQ on the river for the kid to watch the giant fish, Train days, etc.

I actually don't remember the exact layout of the little towns down that way, but I may drive through Forest Hill on my way to Pence Springs occasionally in the summer.

I think you need some Barred Rocks.
I got an "extra" chick with my Easter Eggers that I believe to be a barred rock. He's easily, my friendliest chick and comes running when he sees us. If all of them are like this, I can't say that I want more because it wouldn't be another chicken, so much as another flock.

In other news... Decided against Seramas. The last thing I need is to build another coop and let this get out of control. I have room in my LF coop for 3 or 4 more and will likely grab a naked neck (novelty) and some sort of welsummer or maran for egg color variety. My kid is obsessed with the idea of a pet silkie or three, so looks like a pair of them to boot. I guess it'd be nice to have a broody breed around, just in case..... ;)
