Hello all, I am still fairly new to owning bantams and I posted roughly about a year ago regarding my two bantams but I know if they are unwell and can catch it in time. But I have a new girl which I got in July. She’s only been laying for roughly about 4 months but she’s not laid for about 2 months due to moulting. The last day or so she has spent time in the coop just going in at random times of the day for periods of up to an hour or so. I have checked her and she’s not egg bound. She felt like she has lost a bit of weight. We did have problems with mites but I caught this in the early stages and sprayed all hens and gutted out their coop and I have checked them all every few days since and there is nothing. She was a small hen we first got her she’s grown a bit still a little light in weight is there anything I can do to boost her weight. I brought her in last night for some warmth and she’s not eaten much, I have given her some nutri drops. I am just worried. Like I say I can tell when my other girls are unwell but my new girl is a little more diffcult to tell. Picture of her below from two weeks ago. She is a little bit scruffy and is a pet not a showing bird.

I increase the high protein feed during molt to help them grow feathers faster. I use (purina startina) game bird chow for growth and feathers.

She’s been moulting for two months/three months I have never known them to moult this long. My other girls moult but nothing as long as this, went to pick her up today and she is still losing feathers. I have given her some scrambled egg this morning she sat with me watching tv then I put her back into the out house and she went straight back into the coop I have in there.

When I have a bird that's acting off....
I isolate bird in a wire cage within the coop for a day or two....so you can closely monitor their intake of food and water, crop function(checking at night and in morning before providing more feed), and their poops. Feel their abdomen, from below vent to between legs, for squishy or hard swelling.

Best to put crate right in coop or run so bird is still 'with' the flock.
I like to use a fold-able wire dog crate (24"L x 18"W x 21"H) with smaller mesh(1x2) on bottom of crate under tray.
Then you can put tray underneath crate to better observe droppings without it being stepped in. If smaller mesh is carefully installed, tray can still be used inside crate.
