Young hens stopped laying

If you have other hens of the same age that are laying well, the issue is probably not dietary.  You may just have a hen who decided to quit laying eggs.  I've had a couple of hens that were great egg layers, but who just stopped laying when they were 15 to 24 months old.  Some became internal layers (RIR), but I'm not sure about the others as they seemed healthy, but just stopped laying (golden laced wyandotte, Easter egger).  After months of no egg production, I finally decided to cull them.  

With many hens, this type of decline happens when they reach 3 or 4 years of age, but with others, a dramatic decline may happen much sooner.  It may be genetic, or it may be some type of internal disease or disorder.  Just curious - what breed is she?   

Thank you for the reply ! She's a EE. All my other EE are laying machines even during molt ! I have a few I want to re home. I had hope for awhile. I hope I can find someone. She's sweet. Thank you again!

You're very welcome. I've only had two EE: one who lays almost every day and the other who stopped laying when she was only a year old. Both were very sweet hens. I guess the wide range in egg laying is a result of EE being mixed-breed chickens. Depending on the particular mix, their laying ability may range from excellent to poor.

You are so right! I have 5 two have been molting the whole 6 months and still pumping out eggs like my full breeds. I'm attached to her. So is my husband. He hunts but I know he couldn't do anything to her. Now to find a place that takes a non laying hen. Haha that's funny around here. I'll cross my fingers

Been seeing a similar ordeal with my 3 hens.Hatched in March 2015.Started laying 2 or 3 eggs a day in late August and in early October just stopped laying period.Their organic feed ain't cheap.What's going on here?These Rhode Island reds are supposed to be hardy.Now at late November and still no eggs.Help please.

I'm facing the same thing with Dumb Daphne, the EE. She hasn't laid an egg since December of last year. Dunno why I'm still feeding her, aside from the fact that she makes a great rooster! Maybe she'll make a great chicken sandwich as well. <sigh>

It's frustrating but I know for sure that I won't wait that long.The pet status is running short now.Wyoming? A fantastic state!!

Thanks! We love it here. I still have no idea why I've waited this long to cull Dumb Daphne. She's not even a very pretty EE - just sort of non-descript. But she's a heck of a watchdog! I guess it's a sentimental thing, since she was one of the original 5 EEs in the flock.

She's got a shelf reserved in the freezer when we cull the last of the birds planned, so it's coming. Hope sprang eternal until it sprang a leak, I guess. If she won't feed us one way, she'll feed us the other!
