Don't use rubbing alcohol - that burns. I would use sterile water or peroxide and an antibiotic cream like neosporin. Good luck - I bet you feel sick to your stomach that this has happened. I know I would.

That looks exactly as several of ours did---

we kept them indoors, each in a plastic 20 gallon tote and babied them...

Also coated the wound with Blue-Kote every other day, and added baby vitamins and antibiotics to their water for a week ...
they healed perfectly... well-- a couple will never have tails.

Only certain breeds of ours were attacked by the older birds (Just the Aracaunas, Australorps and Wyandottes) and then their brood-mates joined in on the attacks.

I was also told to coat the back-end of anyone being "plucked" with Vapo-Rub... it doesn't hurt them or the ones that try to pluck or peck-- but they hate the taste and stop immediately.. but you REALLY need to cover ANY wounds that are red with blue-kote or the wounded ones will keep being attacked...

Unfortunately, My Aracauna girl "Valkrie" (one of the gals we had to nurse) was later killed by the flock-- they gutted her when I was away a couple days and had someone else tending them who didn't know what to look for--
don't let it get to that point!

Update - We finally got the "Brooder Box" set up in the coop, and the 6 babies outside are loving it - they are finally away from the adults, warm, and can eat as they please.

I brought the second girl, the brahma, inside. They are now both in my bathtub.

The things I do for my chooks. But, they wont touch the food or the water.....although, they seem to be happier since I brought Ming and Gem isnt alone anymore. I just dont know why they wont go near the water/food? They seem to be perky otherwise, considering the situation.

UPDATE!!!!


Good news! Gem and Ming are doing great. They are both bright eyed and bushytailed. They are eating and drinking great, and no problems in sight! The wounds seem to be healing well! Thanks everybody, for all the help!

UPDATE:


Very, very bad news. I had went out to check on everbody - I had just gotten rid of my Roo, and was letting the big girls and little girl interact freely, but I had a brooder box set up were the babies could get away from them, and the adults couldnt get in - to see my little Brahma, Ming, limping around in the outside run, one of the hens pecking at her. I ran as fast as I could, and It was bad. There is flesh gone from her backside, and she can barely walk - she is trying to go to sleep. I have her wrapped in a blanket and a towel, Ive cleaned the wound with dilouted peroxide and put neosporin on it. I could tell there was a struggle - the hay bale was nocked down from the foodbox, the water-er was turned over, food spilled everywere. Everything was going so well, what happened???! I feel like such a bad mother......my poor baby.


When can I feed her, and give her water? And should I give her something for the pain? Once again, Im at a loss - it wasnt as bad last time. Gem, though, is healing well. Her feathers are starting to grow back.


I'll post pictures ASAP - for right now, Im going to let her rest.

You've done all the right things.

For the pain, dilute 5 aspirin in a gallon of water and allow her to drink that free-choice. BUT if she's actively bleeding, do not administer aspirin b/c it will prevent blood clots from forming.

You're not a bad chicken mom. Flocks find out when a member is sick and may kill it - it's a flock self-preservation thing, not a reflection of anything you've done.
