Advice: Get the biggest, toughest coop and pen you can, and then get another one. they don't stay small for long, and sit with them for a while everyday until they trust you and start climbing into your lap(with old ratty clothes) and make them love you.
Discourage predators!!!!!!!!!
Make the lock to the coop very complex!!!!!

Have ONE large coop (think shed) rather than multiple smaller coops for less time doing chores.

Learn about roosters ahead of time, and have a rooster plan.

Because even if you try to purchase all hen chicks, a rooster will sneak in there sometimes. It's kind of like "all guns are loaded" - all chickenkeepers are at risk for roosters!
