Seriously though, as much as it hurts, and I know it's quite painful, do all you can to avoid impetuous purchasing! Do the research, lurk here as much as you can, ask a lot of questions. Know about the specific breeds you are going to get. Build or buy a VERY secure coop and run, avoid chicken wire and opt for hardware cloth, and build it as big as you can. "Tame" them by spending as much time as possible with them as chicks. Chickens are the ultimate pet. They can love attention and take all you're willing to give, but they can also be perfectly fine when all you have time for is the bare minimum of feeding/watering/sheltering.
