Your 2025 Garden

I am trying a couple of new peach varieties that are claimed to be able to not only survive here but also produce fruit here. Don't have any idea how many years it will take before they are capable of blooming.

I kept a Contender peach alive through the winter of '23-'24 but it did not bloom last spring.
I had Contender and Reliance in TN and they bloomed but didn't set fruit after a frost in bloom time.

The Intrepid I planted are a late blooming variety with blossoms that are said to be frost tolerant.

This particular Contender was about to bloom whe I bought it at Menards. It bloomed and I got 29 peaches off of it in 2023. It is the first Contender that survived a winter for me here.

Had a taste of warmer weather and decided to get around to ordering seeds. I bought some from Gurney’s and from Baker Creek. I like trying new things so I’ll be giving chard a go this year, likely in grow bags alongside my lettuce blend. Maybe between my fancy tomato plants too. Scallop summer squash were looking cool so I got a variety of those and a large winter squash called candy roaster. If I don’t like them I’m sure my chickens will happily accept them right?

Dragon tongue bush beans, suyo and sassy cucumbers, spaghetti and delicata squash, squash seeds I saved from last year, dill, potatoes and probably something else I forgot.

Last frost should be around the beginning of May for my area in MI. I think I’ll begin starting seeds late March-early April. Which is also when I’ll have chicks. It’ll be a busy time for me.

Marigolds are sprouting, as are some of the leafy greens! 🥳 And my onion seeds arrived yesterday! Must get those started this weekend, along with the arugula.

Offhand does anyone know if 8 hours on the grow light is too much for spinach, leaf lettuce etc? I’m tempted to take them off the light, I don’t want them to bolt before I can harvest them (again).

I had one Intrepid tree in TN. It like the rest bore a heavy crop the first year of bearing. No tree had fruit ever again with the late frosty freezes in the mid 20's at bloom set. Not sure what I'll find to plant this year but I want to add to new trees. Large ones that should bloom next year. Today we got one bunch grape planted and 3 more muscadines. With the rows of grapes 10' apart we row crop garden between the rows of grapes.
