Your 2026 Garden

I set up 48 pots in the green house today. I filled the pots with potting soil and watered it well. I have clear totes over them -- sort of a green house inside a green house -- because we're going to have freezing nights later this week. I also covered the tables with black fabric to help them warm up. I plan to do another 30ish pots in the next few days.

I have not planted any seeds. I'm going to wait until Wednesday and watch the noon weather report to see what the next week's temps will be like.

I aim for planting around the first of April.

That's 78 pots! Whoa! What's all going in there besides the usual tomatoes? I may do 12 lol, just some marigolds.

Lots of tomatoes, to be sure. I'll probably do 50-60 pots of them. A few may be for friends, if they want them.

I'll do a few marigolds; they seem to help repel some bugs. Though they are attractive to Japanese Beetles, which I gather for the chickens to eat.

I'll start some butternut squash. Ours and the ones a friend gave me were delicious. The ones I bought from the farm stand were... meh. So we need more of our own.

I think I'll start some cucamelons. Those are just for me, as hubby doesn't care for the crunch of the skin. Most don't make it back to the house; they are a garden snack for me.

We have hubby's hot peppers started here inside under grow lights.

Rain, rain, blessed rain! :wee

Outside of that freak two-day snow in January, we've had less than an inch of precipitation since :old>👶🍾 . (normal above two by now) Last night we were blessed by nature with 3cm/ 1.2 inches of God's happy tears.

The angels were bowling (what Mom used to call thunder rolling down the valley after a lightning strike), which I've always loved listening to. It got a little close last night and made me jump when one ⚡ hit just outside my backyard and lit up the whole house. The crack was so loud even the earthworms were shaken.

An inspection walk through the garden this AM showed one onion uprooted and one summer squash knocked down - both of which were easily remedied. Other than that, all plants seemed grateful for the deep drink of nature's finest artesian water.

Fun fact: Earths atmosphere is 78% nitrogen (the same N as in your favorite fertilizer).
Lightning breaks the strong bonds of N2 atoms in the air. These nitrogen atoms react with oxygen, forming nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which dissolves in rain to form nitrates and nitric acid. Rain washes these nitrates into the soil, providing essential nitrogen for plants.

Looks like all my blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and gooseberries survived the transplant. Can’t wait for fruit!!!!
Radishes are not ready yet, the beans are about 3 inches tall now. Rhubarb is coming up - I was sure my feathered fiends killed it in the fall when they ‘plowed’ the raised beds. Put small fences around the beds as my dogs love to run straight through the beds and the chickens…. Don’t get me started :old
Tidied up about, cut some herbs, watered and thinned radishes some more

I have 4 rhubarb plants, and all have growth showing! The "big" one and the one I planted last year have the most growth showing. The other two are much smaller by comparison.

That encouraged me to get out a jar of my rhubarb jam. Dang, I like that stuff!
"What do you put that on?"
"A spoon."
