Your Favorite Breed of Rooster?

Oh I would show him off also. He is absolutely gorgeous. My Delaware 'Jack' is gorgeous also, but I don't know how to post pictures cause I would love to show him off as well.

Well I have had 5 wyandotte, 4 barred rock, and 4 partridge rock roosters. I kept all till they were 16 weeks old. The one thing I can say is when it was time to choose who would be kept, it was hard to eliminate either Blue Laced Red Wyandotte. I loved both of them, and one of them would come sit in my lap if I had food. Almost all the rocks were agressive toward humans, or loved us and ignored the other chickens. One SLW was afraid of everything and the other we dubbed Ghengis the Battle Chicken, and my SPW is like a hen who lays no eggs... he isn't at all roostery. It depends on the individual. All of those were the same age, from the same hatchery, all raised together. They all turned out different anyway.
If I could keep only one rooster, I would keep my Blue Andalusian. Little bugger was raised in the house with the kids, cat, and dog and thinks he's one of them. He acts all roostery but lets us pet and hold him and he is FEARLESS. If anything he doesn't like comes near their run, he will bite its nose for it. He isn't even full grown and he backed down a hyper labrador who has been known to maim/kill chickens when they escaped from their yard. I dunno how much of that is his upbringing and how much is his nature. He was a solo chick from a batch of eggs we incubated so he was raised alone. The dog taught him how to beg and forrage for table scraps but it was a struggle to get him to go outside because he didn't like the other chickens at first. Spoiled thing thought he was gonna continue being a house pet (and might have succeeded if it were possible to litterbox train a chicken!) But now he has adjusted to being a chicken, and I think he will make a fine flock protecter. Especially since him and the dog are such good friends.

I say pick the breed you like best and pamper the chick- hold him and feed him and expose hime to other animals if you can safely do so. Treat it like a puppy. It worked for my little Indigo. He's growing up to be a great rooster!

I would say my Delaware, George. All other roosters I have had, mixed breed to Black Australorps have turned quite nasty. A few have gone to the pot just on attitude alone. We have spent quite a lot of time with brooms chasing off roosters!!

When my George (one of 4 well behaved Delaware roos) was 3 weeks old he would pop out of the brooder box and have a conversation with me. He got the name curious George, then just George. I also trained him, based on what I saw the roos AND hens do to exert their authority. I placed one hand on his back and flattened him to the ground and then grabbed the feathers on the back of his head and held it down for a few seconds. This is what a hen does to another hen to show her who's boss. So I did the same and it really worked. Four years later George is a gentleman!! He knows that I am the boss!! Of his three brothers, one went to the pot because we needed to get rid of some roos because he just laid in front of the feeder and ATE ALL DAY!! #2 was sadly taken by wildlife and #3 is Georges' right wing man, named "Pepper".

I love Delawares! They forage well, but can be confined to half the yard, rarely go broody, the boys get nice sized and are a calm overall breed. My Black Australorps made me nuts, the roos were vicious from the start and all the hens went broody AT THE SAME TIME. My barred Rocks are making me nuts. I have 1/4 acre fenced and it isn't good enough, they fly over the fence, destroy anything and everything and they want to be in the trees. The leader in mischief ended up with the name "Tylenol" for a reason! They were strange peeps that had it out for me from the start. I somehow ended up with one rooster in my order of pullets and he began attacking me at 3 weeks of age. I knew he was a roo because of his attitude when he went after me. I finally taught him the ultimate lesson. I plucked him up and locked him in the coop with my two good boys, George and Pepper. There was a lot of noise, a little blood, but he came out with a much improved attitude and respect for me and his elders!!!!!

My favorite rooster is not a purebred but to me he is gorgeous and everything I want in a rooster. He is a lavender Ameraucana bred Project bird and I have to say I think he is the most beautiful rooster I ever owned. I call him an EE . Sparky is a great flock leader and takes great care of the ladies . I really love him. He is also gentle with people and will eat from our hands. He has never shown any aggression to people. Whatever the situation in the flock he gets it under control right away. I also have two Orpington Project Roos that are good boys. I also really liked my old Light Brahma Roo. I think as far as my favorite purebred rooster it would have to be Orpingtons. Most of them were really nice birds.

Well as the thread title asks - My favorite breed when it comes to Roosters are Shamos or Black Copper Marans.

But, most people don't get those. So, I'd otherwise suggest an Easter Egger. If you think you're getting an Ameraucana - Chances are you're getting an EE. They're often really sweet, very colorful, and will give colored egg laying offspring.

I had a Silkie Rooster who was so friendly, and a good example for his ladies. He would call them all into the house if a hawk flew over, or anything unusual was going on. Unfortunately his sweet nature was overcome by his younger Barred Rock/Columbian Rock coop mate, who won the fight:( SO; while I LOVED his personality... the Barred Rock/Columbia Rock is obviously more well equipped to protect the harum.

I think your roo must be related to my roo, Daddy--they could be twins!

I agree that they are very handsome! And he's a good boy, too. He has never, ever shown any aggression toward me and, although he is definitely the head rooster he is very tolerant of my other roosters (2 silkies and 1 EE, Junior who is the son of Daddy).

Junior is also a very nice roo, so my vote goes for EE's. My previous roo was a Silver Spangled Hamburg. I enjoyed having him but he couldn't be trusted. He would sneak up behind me and hit me in the back of my legs

...hahaha...he thought he was a big shot but I wasn't afraid of him.

JUNIOR (even more handsome than his dad)

I have had two. One barred Rock that did fine until about 5 or 6 months and then was a monster. then I got a splash orpington. He was not held over much but is so gentle. He will take food from my hand drop it and call his ladies. He waits for them to eat some before he eats. I hope he stays this way. He is hugh but like a gentle giant. Gloria Jean
