Hi all. I thought it would be fun to post our first chicken stories. Mine is simple. We lived in Arkansas and they have Tyson chickn farms everywhere and you see flatbed trailers with thousands of chicks ontheir way to market. One day driving down the highway, we saw one fall off the trailer and we stopped and it was still alive!! We caught her and took her home and named her bam bam. We let her free range on our acre and she followed us like a puppy dog. Being from the Tyson plant she only lived little over a year but she was really cool. Well that was 2002 and we always said if we get in the country we will get chickens. We do not care about the breeds or anything like that. Just want to see all the colors and hear clucking. We now have twenty of various styles. Added bonus? They are a joy and actually really calming to watch.

I was 8 years old, and a friend of my mom's had a flock of their own. I always used to love visiting them and spent most of my time out in the barn with the farm animals. Apparently, mom's friend saw how taken I was with the chickens, because come Easter, she brought over 2 tiny yellow fluff balls for me! They grew up to be beautiful Buff Orpington hens! They were my best friends. I named them Sunny and Buttercup.
Sunny was closest to my heart and I was devastated when she was eventually killed by a ruthless neighborhood dog and their bully of an owner who set them after her. Long story but it was awful. To this day my heart hurts from the trauma of that horrific evening. Wednesday, May 14, 1986. I still remember the date. After that, we got two chicks to keep Buttercup company.

My oldest daughter (9, but 8 at the time) and I are serious animal lovers. We moved to the country 7 years ago and have always wanted chickens. Last spring we decided to get 3 barred rock chickens, one for each of my kids....but before we even got there it turned into 5 chickens....one for each of us. Within a week of that, I was chicken obsessed and by the end of May we ended up with 12 chickens.
