I built and all-in one coop/run copying the Wichita Cabin Coop - and believe me it is fort knox - nothing can get in. It was too small for 6 hens so I had to more than double the original size of the run area but kept the predator proof features. The only things that can get in there are under 1/2 inch - and the flock can easily eat them:). My coop is now almost 5 years old and I still trust just locking them up in the outside doors. And with grandchildren around, you will need to make sure no one leaves any door or opening unlocked.

But all are under one plywood roof covered with metal roofing, all openings are covered with heavy duty 1/2 inch hardware cloth, the perimeter has 2 feet of attached/buried and overlying heavy stones. We do have to watch the carabiners we use for secure closure - the springs wear out and have to be replaced.
