Your Recommended feed.

When I first got my chickens, I feed them Dumor chick starter. The second time i went to buy some, they had none at all.The second bag I bought I decided to try Kalmbatch feed that i bought from Clydes. My chickens loved it, not much dust in the feed and I went on to their web site and their feed looked really good. The eggs are good, i went a week with out oyster shells (Simply ran out and had no time to run to the feed store) and the shell quality did not dip at all. Don't know if this was because of the feed or they just had some in their system, regardless, I recommend their feed. Do any of you guys feed Kalmbatch and if you have/do tell me what you think about them! Any other recommendations post here.

Hens will sacrifice their own body calcium to make solid shells. That's why more often than not, a soft shell is just a hiccup.

I actually tried Kalmbach feeds once and was satisfied, but it came from Amazon and isn't regionally available to me.

I will always suggest against Dumor... too many reports of peoples' birds just not thriving.

I also like to use Purina flock raiser with oyster shell on the side. It's available, affordable, and meets the nutritional need of my whole dual purpose and multi aged/gender flock.

I agree with EggSighted4Life, both Kalmbach and Purina flock raiser are great feeds that I've used on my chickens! Although I would recommend the feed from Purina called "Layena Pellet plus Oyster." I especially like this feed because it has oyster shells mixed in with it, so you don't ever run out as long as you have feed! Also, the oyster shells inside of the feed are in small bits so that they go down easy!

I tried Kalmbach conventional feed & Kalmbach Organic Harvest. My girls did well on both, probably a little better on the regular feed.

I also feed Flock Raiser, with separate oyster shell. It's fresh and available locally for my flock, and works well. Kalmbach isn't so available around here, so I've never tried it, and Dumor looks like 'you get what you pay for'.
Find something that's good quality, and has mill dates within one month, so you can use it up within six or seven weeks of that mill date. I want to see 'open dating' rather than that mystery code, that takes a handbook from the factory to decipher. Mysteries aren't better!

I know not all experiences will be the same. I also know that SOMETIMES the Dumor is actually manufactured by Purina. Maybe the reports of birds doing not so well were on the 15% one they make... and most likely accentuated by people feeding scratch or other lower quality nutrients.

TSC just opened in our town last week!

I don’t recall the percentage of the feed but I fed them the Dumor layer pellets when they started laying. Congrats on the TSC!
