Your roos – good or bad? *Updated Chart on Page 15*

Okay, now that I'm done laughing . . .

I have had 4 roosters. The first was a Dark Brahma. He was pretty good natured - gave him to my niece and she loves him

I had a Salmon Faverolles that was very timid and also had a crossed beak. I loved him . . . for dinner!

I had an EE rooster that was working very hard at becoming a mean snot! He made excellent fried chicken!

Now I have a Salmon Faverolles roo (Emmet) that is 19 weeks old and very sweet. I think he's a keeper.

We just dispatched Clovis this past Sunday. He was an amber sex-link turned mean. It's a shame cause he was a beautiful bird.

I found out that it was my fault though. I babied him when he was little. I didn't know that is a bad thing to do. He became very aggressive. He chased and attacked both my nieces. I was in the hospital for a week, when I came home he went after me. That was the last straw. We have too many kids around the neighborhood to have a rooster that will attack. So he's in the fridge.
Oh, and he crowed EVERY hour, round the clock. I do NOT miss that at all!

Our other rooster Reggie is a RIR.

He almost died when he was a youngster. It's a long story, but some sort of brain injury. He was either hit on the head, or had heat stroke. It took him over a month to recover.
But recover he did! He's stronger than ever, and he's a very good roo. He actually seems to understand that I don't want the girls wandering over to my neighbor's garden. Where Clovis would just go with the girls, Reggie chases them back to the coop!

All my japanese bantam roos have been great. That makes about 5 now. 2 died protecting their hens from a dog and only 1 of their hens got killed before making it to the coop. The first roo died where the dog must have first attacked and the other right in front of the coop as the last few hens were running in. None of them ever get agressive towards people or other chickens but they are very good at calling their hens to safety and putting themselves between their hens and danger. Being tiny things that like I said are not agressive they generally die quickly though. My avatar is Dameru as a tiny chick. He's the main reason I had any hens left and the only son I hatched from him now rules the japanese bantam flock.

My welsummer roo doesn't harm the hens or get agressive towards people but he's a coward and an idiot. He was there when that dog attacked and could have done a lot more to slow it down since it wasn't even a big dog but instead he ran and his hens scattered. When the dog got done with the bantams it tore up every hen that had followed that roo as they ran across the yard in different directions. The roo sat in the safety of the coop. He also frequently tells the hens to do something dumb like try to find food in the fresh clean shavings in the coop instead of going outside where I just threw food and they can free range.

I've had 1 good and 1 bad bantam EE roo. The bad one attacked anyone and everything including the hens. He lost his head quickly. The good one I still have and he counters my idiot standard roo by calling the hens to food and water. While he hasn't gotten agressive or attacked anyone he does let up a huge ruckus when his hens are being handled or a strange person walks into his coop.

My 3 serama roos are ok. They don't harm the hens. They are pretty bold and would probably stand up to things even if they died even quicker than the japanese bantams. They do occasionally start fights with each other where my other roos don't and they all will peck me if I try to handle a hen. They are a little more agressive than I'd like but otherwise good roos.

I have 10 Roo's at the moment. 1 Buff O, 3 Bantam Cochin, 2 Seramas, 1 Blue Dutch, 1 Deleware Mix, and 2 polish. Only 1 is a big meanie! He is one of the Polish . I think i may get rid of him LOL!!! My other Roos are very nice! Especially my Cochin Roo's and my Serama Roo's!!

I've got 2 Roos.

Spray, a red pyle banty, who was babied as a chick. He is tame and likes to be held, but will peck at feet/legs if you get too close. I don't think he understands that those feet/legs are attached to his humans.

Carlos, BB OEG banty, who was also babied as a chick, but not as much. He never tries to peck, but doesn't like to be held either.

We have 2 roos (and possibly 3!

) But the one that may be a rooster is young so he/she shares a coop with one of the two roosters and they don't fight. The two adult ones (an aggressive RIR and a shy Splash Cochin) are in separate coops so they don't fight.

Here's Marty the RIR roo:

Marty is a very aggressive rooster...when he's on the ground, anyways.
roll.png
He will chase after you and try to kick you with his toe-less and spur-less feet (frost bite and just a little while ago his last spur fell off for no reason at all...
idunno.gif
) But anyway, he will bite HARD when you try to touch him (and I mean HARD! He has drawn blood before and can cause small bruises...)
hide.gif
But, while you may be thinking he's a horrible rooster, he's so nice and gentle when you pick him up!? LOL when we pick him up, he won't bite at all, he lets you pat him, he eats from your hand, he sits on your lap, he lets you carry him around, and he will even fall alseep in your lap!
lol.png
But if you put him on the ground, you better run or he will attack you.
hide.gif

We raised him from a day-old chick and babied him(probably not the best thing to do, but we didn't know that it would lead to bad behavior).
hmm.png
Oh and Marty is about 3 years old now.
smile.png
But even if he's such a strange rooster, we love him anyways.

Foghorn is our Splash Cochin rooster. He's a little over a year now, but we aren't sure exactly how old he is. We got him at a chicken swap from a fellow BYCer and he was so skittish and scared of us. But we bought him anyway, since we needed a rooster for our Buff Orp pullets, and Marty was with his 4 RIR pullets/hens. When we got him home, we noticed how whenever he saw something, such as our dog or a hawk or anything that looked scary or threatening, he would make a loud goose sound/screech (hence the name, Foghorn).
tongue.png
Whenever we picked him up, which we had a hard time doing, he would strike your hand if it was in his reach. He wasn't aggressive, he was just so afraid of humans.
idunno.gif

Today, he's still skittish(but not as bad as when we first got him) and he will bite you if you put your hand near him. But we love our little Foggy, despite his shyness.

Here's a picture of Foghorn:

P.S. I like looking at all you guy's roo pictures; all of them are very beautiful! But looks can be deceiving with the aggressive ones.

no offense meant, it just popped out and I couldn't resist! He actually looks really pretty, I just found this thread that's why my comment is quoting posts and referenceing pics from page one!)

age both about 14 weeks

barred rock- meh, afraid of everything and runs and screams like a girl.

a very muttly EE- food hog extrodinair, does take care of the little EE girl and the BR boy, but totaly ignores the BO girls and will smash everybody out of the way for food.

I did not like my BO roo's they were horrible. I set up a death roo sign and all and worked my way down whoever was eating first, and most importantly being mean to the hens....to jail they went then 24 hrs later......Off with his head!!!!
