my boys. First is Rocky a GL Wyandotte Cockeral. He is super sweet and very polite with the girls

Second is Mr. Stud Muffin, my white silkie roo. He protects his girls, does his business, cuddles and just a great boy

Well, I adore BJ roo, as many have read. I've known and admired BJ for something like 8 years now. I could (and will) write a book about this stellar fellow. Gentle, brave, selfless, deeply sensitive to any difficulties experienced by the ladies that have been in his life, and adored by them beyond measure.

Will try to get back to paste a pic here when I can refresh my memory on how to do that !

Quote:
I wish I could help, but my hands are full of foster rescues and permanent residents. I know that searching for good homes is a big task and no small sacrifice; I have sometimes made over 400 contacts before finding the right home for a roo or a cat or a whatever - not easy. All the best.

I have mixed feelings about my BO roo, Buddy. I had 7 roos to begin with and did not intend to keep him but he turned out to be the nicest looking and acting one after my other favorite one fell and broke his neck. He takes good care of his ladies other then being a little rough with them. He is a fierce protector though. He tried to fight my GSD/Rottie mix when she was chasing one of his girls. I dont think that I will ever fully trust him though, he is always eyeing me:rolleyes:

Our roosters, at least those who have made themselves obvious, are a white silike and a golden laced polish. Both are very cute, very noisy, but very safe. I really like them.

Buster, the polish, is a riot. I go out there and he does this little shuffle. I shuffle back and he dances a bit. If I move a bit closer, he does a hop step where he jumps a couple feet in the air and plops back in the same spot - then struts away a bit. Very amusing.

We only have one roo. A black astralorp. He was hatched in the spring of this year. He is LOVELY! I love listening to his talks to the hens, and watching him find goodies for them to eat. He doesn't approach humans so no spurring us. He sounds an alarm if he thinks there's danger, and gratefully, all 30 hens listen to him! They take cover under the nearest bush, or into the coop. He is scared of my dogs and cats, and watches them on high alert. Some of the hens however attack both of my smaller dogs, and the cats. My beagle is scared of chickens now, and won't go anywhere near them. She'll even go to a different door to come in the house if the chickens are near her usual door.

But back to Mr. Roo, he is just stunning to look at, and a great addition to our flock! I personally wouldn't want a free-ranging flock without a good roo. He calls them into the coop at night, and quickly herds them out in the morning.

My only complaint is the mating in the morning. He MUST mate every single hen, every single morning! I dont' know how he keeps going but he does. He was rough with the mating at first, but has gotten the hang of it quickly, and is gentle now. He courts them first, and sometimes tricks them but calling them over to eat a yummy morsel he's found, and then tries to mate.

My kids get tired of his crowing, but I love to hear it! Reminds me that I'm finally back in the country where I belong!

I have a four cockerels that are about 6 months old. They are pretty tame but now and then run after me and kick at my legs when I turn my back. If I face them they run like hell. They really like to go after my little kids. I am planning to put them in their own coop this week, for a number of reasons. One so my kids can go in the main coop and take care of the hens without fear. two so I can feed them a different ration and three so they will not pressure the hens so badly.

I think to cull all roosters who show this slight aggression removes some of the vigor that is desireable in our birds. So I am keeping these guys.

I'm pretty new and just getting used to my roos. We processed 23 a few weeks ago, but 2 got missed because one was marked as a hen and another looked just like him, so my DH was confused when seperating them. Anyway, 2 days ago I was getting everyone into the barn for the night. Usually they do this themselves, but I wanted them in a little early. Everyone went in easily except for 2 pullets on one of the "mistakes." They would not go in.

Finally, one of the big "planned" roos came out and herded them all in.

It was fascinating to watch him work. The hens went right in, but the lesser roo took a little longer, but he got the idea.

By the way, they are all the same age.

I am not sure what my roo is, I think he is a mut. We love him. He is a bit fiesty at times, but is gentle on the girls, no bare backs and is good to them. When he sexually matured Ihe got kinda mean and I thought I might have to cull him but he then settled down and now just does the roo dance if he feels we are too close. I chase him off if he does that and he backs down quickly. We find him humorous. My neighbors EE roo is incredibly mean. He attacks us when we least expect it. I have never seen a meaner rooster in my life. They won't kill it becasuse their 10 yr. old daughter ia a vegitarian. When we offered to process him for them (because he attacks us all the time) their daughter quit coming over. Oh well... But the EE roo beats the crap out of mine and mounts our hens all the time when they free range, I've had to coop ours to keep them away from him. I've heard many say EE roos can be mean. I've never owned one but my experience is they sure can be. My kids carry sticks with them now, he is the meanest I've ever seen.
