Neither is ear piercing but no one would call that sleazy. I guess the point is, society and cultures have perceptions about what is correct behavior. Norms are set through these societial 'rules' but stepping back from that, one has to question 'why?' Why is one thing acceptable and another not. We are not talking about things like murder, theft, adultery (though some cultures...) but simple things. There was a time that if a woman showed her ankle she was branded as 'loose'. and shunned in polite society. Now we have moms running around in shorts and flipflops. My Great Great Granny would be scandalized.
In some cultures even now, a married woman without her head covered is in danger of being stoned by her relatives for ' dishonoring them'.
Culture and behavior is a sticky wicket indeed.... I preach tolerance whenever possible. If it isn't hurting someone, who am I to say what someone does to their own body?
