Ahhh, my Zane fix for the evening. Thanks, Cynthia for posting his picture. What a love he is.

I sincerely hope and feverishly pray that he is with his girls again and can walk tall among the best of 'em.

The admiration I have for you and Tom for the way you treat and take care of him has no bounds.

Sorry to revive this thread but wondering how is Zane doing so far since it has been a couple of years.

Need an update on him so, SpeckledHen, please do write something about him!

Wow, how nice of you to ask about my Zane! Zane turned 4 years old this past November. He lives in his special cage inside of Suede's coop, gets outside when it's warm and dry enough and is a cheery fellow for the hand life dealt him. His special girlfriend, Gypsy, who was raised with him, visits him on occasion like in the photos below, taken recently.

Zane is doing very well. He had a brief bout with pneumonia recently like a bedridden person might have, but we caught it very early and gave him Tylan and he recovered very quickly. He's my sweet angel. We keep his spurs, toenails and beak trimmed for him, dust him with DE since he can't dustbathe and make sure he has grit in his feed every week and he does amazingly well for a bird who has been crippled for most of his life.
*I moved this thread to Pictures and Stories, where it should have been in the first place, I think*

Below, if you look on the right side, that cage in the center is where Zane lives, above the broody pen and below the hospital cage. Suede's coop section is on the left:

Zane is a lovebug! I have had the pleasure of meeting him and spoiling him with blueberry muffins and on my last visit which was this fall, buttermilk pancakes. He has the most incredible comb you have ever seen and he loves being talked to. He let me rub his comb and wattles and I had the joy of carrying Gypsy to him for a visit and let me just say that seeing him light up when his girl comes to visit is a priceless memory. He can dance pretty darn good too!

Utter sweetness!

Looked like he took his "handicapped" life as easy as possible without losing his dignity of his status of a rooster. I am sure he dotes on his girlfriend, probably clucking sweetly and whine if she isn't nearby. As a babysitter, he probably does a very good job even he would risk his life.

Is he able to get around or does he has to be moved around? I often wonder if the constant laying around would compress his chest and it would grow in a weird way? Sure it may not have bothered him at all, suffered no ill effects.

With Zane, and his wonderful parents, Zane would not have made it this far in life.

He can maneuver from place to place when he wants to on his one good leg, using his wings as crutches. He hops surprisingly fast, is super alert. He crows with the best of 'em, too!

Yes, he does lay on his chest most of the time and has lost all muscle mass there from lack of exercise, but he's a cheerful guy. He's such a love, holds very still for me to stroke his face, comb and wattles and has the warmest expression in his eyes when he looks at me. I've always said he's the love of my life. He seems to derive so much joy from life still. I wouldn't keep another handicapped bird, though.
