I'm sure Zane doesn't mind cuddling with you and having you whisper in his ear while Shadow munches his food. Eventually, he'll cozy up to her, and she will like the warmth.

Maybe he just wanted extra love? Try giving treats when you put her in there, maybe he will associate her with good things? Keeping them both warm would be worth extra poop patrol! Darling Zane- he is one beautiful boy!

Tomorrow, I'll try it again. Maybe, as suggested, give Zane and Shadow special food together and see if they'll bond a bit. Seeing her mostly alone makes me want to get her some cute little pint-sized friends, maybe a little studly hubby. She's such a sweetheart.

Chicken poo mess is no fun. But, maybe deep bedding so you can flip it around every day. Tough call, LOL. Maybe it won't be so bad.

Made a bowl of oatmeal/grits/eggs/olive oil/vitamins and took it out to Zane's cage, put Shadow in with him. At first, he talked and complained and turned his head away like he was scared to look that little thing in the eye, then they were both eating out of the bowl, their heads about 3" apart. I had to take it away since Shadow's tiny crop was getting super full. Zane thumped back to his heat bulb and smashed himself against the back wall. Shadow stood around trying to find her escape route. They are just so nervous around each other right now, I think it will take longer for them to get calm around each other than I have till the frigid weather hits. I do think it could work eventually, though. Anyway, she got to eat unmolested and got some water before going back with the mean bunch she lives with. Wish I'd thought of it sooner, really. What we think is a good idea may not go over as well with a chicken, LOL.

I am watching and waiting. I cannot believe they are both so nervous. It sure would make it easier if they would settle in with each other. Keep us posted.
