Zane and Shadow...Roommates? (Cute Pic, post #79)

AWWW Cyn!

I know the cold is harsh on chickens and I'm trying hard too, in keeping them warm as well! They enjoyed the hot water too!

Gosh Cyn! I sure hope this cold snap doesn't last nearly as long as the weather people are predicting. Your poor flock just isn't prepared for this, are they? How cold is it supposed to get over night?

I know our girls can handle overnight lows of -10, but that is with all doors closed, the 200 watt heat lamp on, and the coop is insulated. It would definitely be a case of "the more the merrier" for the added body heat. I worried so much a couple of months ago when we were hitting the minus 10's as our flock is down to just 9 girls now, in a coop that was meant for at least 20 or more.

I'll be keeping my fingers extra crossed for you flock Cyn. Sure hope they're going to be ok. Maybe a third heat lamp is in order?

aaawww Cyn sorry Olivia is not doing better.

You can always let Gracie go and visit with Zane...he loves her and is comfy with her, even though she eats all his food. He needs to be a house chicken Cyn but your dog would have a coronary so I see no alternative but for you to let me pick up Zane when I come to get Isaac and Suede.

I will let him live in the house and rule it with me.

Cetawin is a bad bad rooster stealing girl...yes she is BUT she gives fair warning of the impending theft

Ladyhawk, I think you meant Gypsy, not Gracie (i'm getting alot of "G" names here, aren't I?). Gypsy is fine till his food is all gone. The other day when I put her in with him, she ate and ate. Then, when Zane made his way over to the food bowl and literally laid his body across it (stop eating, woman, and pay attention to me! LOL), she began picking at his sickle feathers. She'd pick it up and pull on it, then drop it. Not sure where that was going, but after that, she wanted out of his cage.

You are going to have nothing but roosters, m'dear, if you take all mine home with you. Oh, wait... you didn't say you were taking Dutch. I think I know why, LOL.

I think we'll get to around 10 degrees again tonight, but could be single digits. There are heatlamps in the coops and if anyone really needs to warm up, she or he can go stand under one of them. Zane has to have heat in winter, so Suede and his girls benefit from that, being in the same room with him.

When we gave Olivia her injection tonight (second round, different antibiotic), it seemed to me that maybe her abdomen wasn't as taut as it has been, but it could be wishful thinking. Time will tell.

Yes I meant Gypsy...I know Gypsy so why type Gracie? hmmmm Gypsy is such a hussy...eats that boy's food and he saves her from exploding ... for what repayment? She messes with his sickles...I mean that is not nice of her at all.

Several reasons:

1. I am not fond of BRs except Zane
big_smile.png
He is such a snuggle buddy and sweet talker;

2. I would be forced to hand Dutch over to Cheyenne for a sissy bubblebath and/or a blow dry with nail polishing if he became a jerk and he might go into shock at the unfair treatment of it all; and

3. With Zane, Ike and Suede added to Thor and Severus ... there will be no room ... where will my DH live?

I am keeping Olivia in my prayers. I hope she bounces back Cyn.

Brrrrrrrr!!! Now that is cold! Even we only suffer through an average mid winter night time low of around 20-25!! Where's that icicles hanging off your nose smiley when we need it??

It sounds like you've done everything humanly possible for your babies to get them through this cold Cyn. But, I'll still keep my fingers and everything else crossed that they'll all come through this adventure in Global Warming (my buttfeathers!) in one piece!

As always Cyn, you and your "family" are in my thoughts and prayers! And that goes for the rest of y'all in the deep freeze that should be in moderate temperatures. Sure hope feathers are enough to keep everyone warm!

Was 10* again this morning. I hope I don't lose a couple older girls this winter. Lexie has gnarly, arthritis-ridden feet and she must be miserable since she's also trying to finish her molt. All prayers very much appreciated. I've done all I can do for them, but you should have seen me one day. I had a bowl of that warm oatmeal/grits concoction in the wooden brooder and one by one, brought in Olivia, Shadow, Lexie and Maxie in to get full of warm food and out of the cold for a short spell. Maxie wont eat, though.

Cold here too, hauled warm water to horses and chickens, getting ready to run to town and get some more oatmeal to make for everyone. Trying to get lights set up where I think they really need them. Mace and girls will get one (In fact one is in their coop already, with 8 fluffy bodies in there and a light, they should be real toasty. I moved birds around to try and get them warmer.

aaaawww Cyn I will keep your girls in my prayers...especially Olivia, Maxie and Lexi. You are a good chicken mom and they love ya.

I'm hoping that Maxie's body will take over and kick out whatever infection she may have internally or whatever it is will right itself. I gave them warm butternut squash rinds and chopped kale this morning and she was in there eating with everyone else. It's just so frustrating, having no real idea what's wrong with the girl. She isn't related to the Delaware pullet I lost last year to a heart defect, though, from her color, it was the first thing I thought of. Olivia may survive, too, but poor Lexie....there's no cure for her ailment, old age and arthritis. She's a special girl, gave me all my BR roosters I've kept.
