Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

Cyn, have you thought about calling UGA vet school and asking them about him? a lot of times they will look at animals for free so the students can get some good hands-on experience or at the very least they may be able to give you some ideas about what happened and some therapy ideas over the phone.

Stacey, when that happened, Zane was laying on the ground in the sun and he hopped up and walked a few steps. I think a disc is out of place and is pressing on a nerve-it's so similar to my own DH's back issues right down to Zane standing with one shoulder higher than the other.
Bert, no, we haven't thought of that. I'll mention it to Tom.

Bless Zane's heart... I really am trying to help you sort this out Cyn. It does sound like his problem is something in his back. Hmmmm... I will keep trying to sort this out!

Sending Zane my best wishes and hugs!

I think you and DH need some hugs too!

I really appreciate all the support! My preference is certainly for Zane to pull through this. He was my comfort after losing Hawkeye then suddenly he was in serious trouble. Without Zane, my girls have no rooster to protect them till Zane's baby brothers in the brooder grow up. And he is such an intelligent boy, not sure they'll be as smart as their big bro.

If you are considering it related to an injury then I would also consider restricting his movement.
A jackrussell got through a hole in my fencing (first time I have ever seen a loose dog here and this one was from a new neighbor that I was unaware of) killed Pepper and four of my favorite hens including Mhing... Bandit was devastated and still after all this time avoids their old hangout coop like the plague... (the other day I was working on fixing the roof on the winter coop opposite their favorite summer one (roofed run connects the two > the dog slaughtered them in the run btw< ... I looked up and I saw Bandit running towards me then he kinda stopped and very sloly came further then got all hunched up when he realized mhing and pepper werent there I guess)
After that I decided to tear down the run and coop and put it where he and Miss Daisy are currently sleeping (the small brooder coop)... call me crazy if you wish but I see that he is still upset by what happened so I am just moving the coop to a totally different section of the yard (their chicken porch where the brooder set up is) and hopefully by the time winter comes and the fact that the run and summer coop is no longer there he will feel good bout using the winter coop.

Not Mhing!!! Oh, no, Diana! I'm so sorry, I didn't hear about that. I remember her well. I don't think you're crazy at all because I see what happened when Zane realized that Hawkeye was really gone. He just sort of sank in on himself. Then the fall happened when he tried to take his place on the roost with the girls and his daddy wasn't there to keep order.
Zane's movement is restricted. He is in the broody pen and just lays there. No one can chase him, so he isn't inclined to run or jump or startle. His food and water are basically under his beak and I put a heatlamp in there as well for him (nights are still very cool).

Do you have one of those special red lamps they use on (human ) muscular injuries? I have read in DVM magazine how this is helpful for spinal injuries in dogs and I cannot imagine it would be detrimental for a bird to do the same...
Yes, it happened a couple of months ago (I was simply too broke up about it to even make a posting at the time)... the only two spared of my "core"group were Bandit and Miss Daisy (she was inside with chickies >some of them are Mhings) ... snif
The dog is now rehomed to another city (he he he)

No, I don't have that particular heatlamp, just an ultraviolet 150 watt used with reptiles a wonderful customer brought me for my nursery coop. Would that have any added benefit over a regular heat bulb, do you think?
Diana, I'm so sorry. A friend had an entire pack of Jack Russells kill a bunch of her birds I sold to her, two young Blue Orpingtons among them. They can be relentless. I'm so sorry for your loss.
