Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

The hammock was a great idea! Maybe he can go back out and sit in it again this evening when it cools down.

It sounds like your DH needs some TLC as well.

Sorry that both boys are having such a hard time. Give them both lots of hugs. Here some hugs for you to, Cyn!

I have a small suggestion for ya.

I have that Speckled Sussex that got mysteriously injured and couldn't walk.

I made her a sling from an old towel. Ct holes for her legs and used it to let her walk outside...what little walking she would do, but it helped her a little.

She is up and walking now.....clumsily, but up, nonetheless.

I'm having the same issue with her eating that you are having. I am shocked that she hasn't passed on by now, the bird hasn't eatin squat in the last week!

We gave her some watermelon and corn on the cob yesterday and she took to it. Keep mixing up what you are giving him...I resorted to ANYTHING I could think she might take to, even mashed potatoes and gravy, lol!

My heart sank as I read all of this thread, tears in my eyes.

Only a few of us here, that have been here for years know the heartache of having a hurt bird and not much means to go outside the home for care.

I spent almost a year on my dear Lucas, i lost him just days shy of his first birthday.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here....Have you tried the Selenuim/Vit E? It worked on my Lucas, with a combination of prednisone.
The Selenium I got at wal mart and I had the prednisone from one of my dogs ( this dog had the same disc issues you are talking about and that is what the vet gave).

If you need...I can send you some, I have extra, anything to help out!

Also, Please be careful with the massage....Sometimes that can make any kind of infection worse. The massage stimulates the blood flow in the body.

ANY help you need, I'm here, I know the fight to save that one special bird, and I know the devastation of losing one. I still miss my Lucas, he was one of a kind and I would give the world to have him back!

crzychickenlady, I remember Lucas. It's been awhile, hasn't it? The towel is a good idea. I'm sure we could fashion a sling from one. We did try the neckstretcher thing, but it let his head hang too far down. And we haven't done any massage on him in days and days for just that reason you mentioned.
A BYC friend, who is currently in PT for an auto accident related injury, asked her therapist about Zane (can you believe this? You people are in therapy in pain yourselves and are asking for help for my rooster. It brings tears to my eyes how special you are!). The guy said that if Zane's back is not broken, and I'm sure it isn't, that it's probably a bruised nerve/muscle and will take a long time to heal, that the sling is a good idea to raise him up off his legs in a more normal position. I need to get the vitamin E capsules just for my broody, in case she goes the way of my Sunny near the end, twitching her head and almost going into convulsions from dehydration, etc. They can do double duty for Zane, too.

I just checked on him and I found him stretched out, his right wing stretched out to provide balance, and his head in his bowl, chowing down. From time to time, he'd pull his head out, lean to the right to get a sip from his waterer, then go back to eating. He's been at it for about 15 minutes like a horse with a feedbag strapped on! Not sure exactly what this means or if it will continue, but I'm hopeful.

We did put him in the hammock again this afternoon and he was dozing in the breeze while I rocked him. I think it really relaxed him and took pressure off his hocks from lying down all the time. Tomorrow, maybe we can try to fashion a sling from a towel for him.

Eating like a chow horse is always a good sign. Way to go Zane. He can get his strength back if he continues eating well. I think laying off the massages was the right thing to do so he can get some rest and really heal. Still praying for him.

Edited to add that you had me holding my breath and scared to death when I read you'd found him stretched out with head down in bowl - it wasn't a good image. Glad it finished with ...eating like a horse.
