Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

ever since i read this thread when it first started i immediately had this feeling that there was more to it than just depression and overwhelming anxiety and the feeling lingers still. what did you ever decide was wrong with that hen you lost a while back? what were the circumstances of Zane's fall? do you feel he was weakened before the fall? what are the benefits of feeding the garlic? do chickens like garlic? I sure hope Zane makes a quick turnaround. we are all rooting for him!

Bert, Lacy seemed to die of an egg-related issue. We found loose yolk in her abdominal cavity. All her organs were the picture of health (yes, we opened her up and checked their condition since she looked like she just fell asleep and died).
After Hawkeye died, and Zane was trying to make his place in the flock, he was being harrassed and pushed off one of the high roost bars by the older hens. He was frantically flapping his wings when he missed the next one up and just couldn't make it, so he fell to the floor. There were lots of shavings, hence alot of padding, but he did lean against the wall for a few seconds like it really hurt. I was standing in the coop and couldn't get to him in time to catch him. He must have twisted his back. His foot was really swollen, but that has since gone down. When he stands, one shoulder is now higher than the other, just like my DH when his own back is out, so I think he's in lots of pain. And his wings sort of hang a little. One postive note, or at least I feel it's positive, is that he will on occasion, stand up and slowly flap his wings. Maybe it will just take time, but I am worried that he won't eat enough to keep up his bodily functions and general health till he feels better. The garlic is just for the same thing people eat it for, his immune system. He seems to like it because he eats the tops of the garlic growing in the yard. Not all chickens like it, though.

Cyn, I am so sorry yall are going thru this and sorry cause I just found this thread. His depression will take time so just keep up the great love and support yall are giving him and in time he will be the Zane you knew before all the grief and injurys hit.

Zane is in our pet carrier and will spend the night in the house with us. I have a broody suddenly, so I need the broody pen. It's just as well he's in the carrier since he doesn't stand up much anyway. I can watch him and he'll have us for company. My DH said this morning he was afraid he'd have to put him down, but I dont want to even think about that right now, it's too soon. Then I think of Carri's Hotwing. I believe we have a similar situation with the injury aspect, plus Zane's sudden loss of his only pal, his father. Time will tell. It won't feel right here without a Barred Rock rooster. They are so wonderful, and this particular family line is just the best.

Cyn, DO NOT put him down until you are 110% certain that it's what you need to do. As long as he's showing progression (and he may have bad days... we all do when we're sick or injured), as long as he's eating and drinking... just watch him. And the wing flapping is a great sign.
You know the situation with Hotwing from our PMing back and forth... my vet, whom I trust very much, exhausted his resources and told us it was best for Hotwing.
Have you tried calling Peter Brown?
