Zane Made REAL Progress (New Pics Pg 99)!RIP Lorelei...

Been reading and following, just hope that an answer/solution will come along and that your ladies and gentleman will be right as rain. How hard to have this go on for such a long time.

I've also been following along with this thread from the beginning.

Zane is such a handsome fellow, I hope he makes a full recovery. Then he can take his rightful place in your flock.

I am very interested in what you find out about your girls. I don't have any chickens the age of yours, but you now have me thinking about their feed. I use layer pellets that I get from our local feed store.

I am hoping that your Zane and girls pull through. They are very lucky chickens to have such caring people taking care of them.

Keep the faith!

Angie

"FY99
New Investigator Award recipient Dr. Patricia
Johnson and colleagues at Cornell University
also are studying ovarian
cancer in chickens through
the use of two related
genetic chicken strains, which
differ in the spontaneous incidence
of ovarian cancer. These studies may
uncover the differential susceptibility
to ovarian cancer."

I wonder if this is the reason the hatchery chicks seem to be having more problems than backyard breeder chicks?

"Chickens are the only animals that have developed spontaneous ovarian cancer at a high rate."

This was also in one of the research articles that I read. Not the same article as your link but that makes it more telling. I know there can be other factors involved with the problems with our hens but once those are carefully & systematically "checked off" you just have to look at this propensitity towards OV Cancer as a reality. I plan on looking into possible diet additives, herbs, or changes to either stop or help delay the onset of the cancer. Knowing "what" causes the spontaneous cancer would be helpful but the articles I read were just that they were using hens to research because of the high OVC. rate. Sigh!! I hate to think I'm going to loose another 6 or more to this diesease over the next year or two. We came across an herb growing on our land and it grows all over the world that has scientifically been proven to work curing two herpes viruses. It is also touted as a crude anti-cancer cure. We are going to look further into this. This would be providential if it works out but I have learned "you can't count your chicks before they hatch".

. . . and sometimes beyond the hatch!

I do hope Zane recovers, will continue to pray for his full recovery, and I can pray that this isn't a cancer problem with our hens but one we can "nip in the bud" before it's too late.

Oh I hope that all of these hens do not have cancer.

How disheartening.

I hope Mr. Zane is holding up okay today.

Sending your daily dose of hugs, Cyn.

Cyn I have been reading your posts and I am sorry you have been having such a problem. We are in Florida but our local feed store gets their feed from Georgia. its mid-South Feeds 403 Market Street,ALma Ga.31510 they have a website. We use the Premium Quality Chicken feed its all natural. Dont know if this will help as i dont know how close they are to you. We have been using these foods for three years and have not had any problems with them. Micki

I haven't seen any of that feed around here, but I'll look for it, Micki, thanks. I can't afford to pay much more than I'm paying now, but I certainly need for it not to be contaminated.
Ruby, Rosemary and Lorelei are hanging around together. That is very unusual, but it's like they know something. Found them all laying together under the steps to the deck today, three different points on the pecking order.

Well I'm glad that Lorelei has some buddies to hang out with now anyway. I just hate the circumstances that have prompted the partnership.
