Zebra, Pampas & other tall ornamental grasses--are they ok??

I'm in Renton & I have golden bamboo that will shoot up maybe close to a foot a day. Maybe it's a little exaggerated. But it does grow fast. I agree with what JR... said about runner bamboo. But I just cut off the culms as they come up in the spring, and they are done for, that year. Also it doesn't grow under the deck, in the dark. Also it takes about 3-4 years for it to start growing fast. They say it sleeps, creeps, then leaps. A great resource is the Bamboo Gardens just outside Redmond on the way to Fall City. Great people, very friendly and helpful. They have a bamboo for every need from 2 inch bamboo to 200 foot bamboo.

im actually thinking of putting bamboo in the area that will be between the run and the garden fence, weve got bushes along the fenceline and then this huge gap of nothing...im thinking a dwarf clumping bamboo mabe?, otherwise ill just be planting some more bushes to fill in the gap, its also the spot that kids often cut through in the winter to get to a good sledding hill, hmm mabe that would be a good spot for pampas lol

I don't think there's anything special about where we live (it's North Texas). It's the nature of the plant, quite amazing. And now we have a forest just from that one little plant I bought that cost a few dollars. The chickens like to scratch around under the bamboo because it provides good cover, but they really don't eat it because the leaves are mostly too high out of their reach. I do cut bamoo and put it up in the cages of our indoor birds; the parrots love nibbling on the leaves and climbing all over the branches.

I will say that's the one and only time I ever saw a bamboo plant at Home Depot or Lowe's. I'm really glad I grabbed it. They probably don't carry more bamboo because they know if they did, they'd lose a lot of repeat customers buying bedding plants every year.
