zicam---loss of smell

Only used the lozenges that melt in your mouth, never a problem. But now I may not due that anymore. Last time did not help my cold out at all, lasted 2 months!! used to work before that.

I feel horrible for the people going through this, but there is a silver lining: maybe now something will be done to recognize those of us who can't smell! I've NEVER been able to smell, and it has nothing to do with medication.

I've had doctors tell me, "Oh, if you couldn't smell, you couldn't taste either." Not true, and my response is always the same-- "If I can't taste, why am I fat?!". Taste and smell have nothing to do with each other, as I can attest.

Smell is one of the 5 senses. If someone can't see or can't hear, they at least get special accomodation. But someone who can't smell? Ha! No such luck. It can be just as debilitating as any other major loss.

I've had 4 babies, but never got to enjoy that "new baby" smell.

I have to rely on the opinions of others if I want to buy perfume. And God forbid I should forget deoderant on a hot day; I walk around paranoid until I get home!

I spent 17 years of my life living by the Ambrosia Chocolate Factory in Milwaukee, and never ONCE got to smell the wafting cocoa scent.

Gas leak? Raging inferno? Sorry, I'll be dead. I can't smell either one.

In my opinion, those people should sue the poo out of the drug company. That is a HUGE thing to take from someone.

Slow news day (I smell politics - going after a larger class of currently unregulated substances, maybe?).

130 reported cases out of a user population of how many?

The manufacturer has been sued before with no success: http://zicamlawsuits.com/

Remember
, that, last summer, billions of tomatoes that could have been thrown at the FDA actors who wrongly identified them as being laced with Salmonella, ended up rotting. Yeah, how about those Jalapenos from Mexico (three months it took to properly ID the source)?

Spend the money on some more ag. inspectors and quit trying to twist my nose.
(Actually, I swear by a few drops of Lea&Perrins Worcestershire sauce on the back of the tongue, clears out the snout forthwith and I can't smell a thing thereafter)

Me, too. Never had a sense of smell, and most likely never will. And I am NOT skinny!

I don't really miss something I've never had, but it's gotta be bad to loose something you DID have.

If I lived near a paper mill

, I'd be popping Zicam like Pez!

I had no idea why I had loss my sense of smell... I'm mean almost completely.

I did Zicam regularly for at least 3 years.... and I never had a cold.

I would sometimes pass gas and not smell anything and think I was getting better with age.

Not to make light of a serious problem, but this sounds like a plus to me.

I have 7 cats currently.

Imp- I used to work with a dietitian with no sense of smell or taste. How weird is that?

I really liked her.

I've never used it but know people that do. The main ingredient in it that keeps you from getting a cold is Zinc, so the easiest thing to do is just take the appropriate zinc supplement.

I never understood the swabbing your nose thing

with a product other than saline because of all the sensory issues there. Our ENT freaked out when I asked for Flonase once ...saying nosesprays cause such serious issues - my ENT's beleif is that anything you put in there will desensitize and destroy.

I'm so sorry to all those that have lost their smell.

Thats awful.

For those that are currently taking Zicam in any form - just take a zinc supplement, but please do the mathmatical equation to get the right doseage for your height/weight as not all pills are for all people

I think Zicam is just the newest target of some class action lawsuit firm. We've used the stuff for years without any problems. No complaints from people we've recommended it to either.
