I feel horrible for the people going through this, but there is a silver lining: maybe now something will be done to recognize those of us who can't smell! I've NEVER been able to smell, and it has nothing to do with medication.
I've had doctors tell me, "Oh, if you couldn't smell, you couldn't taste either." Not true, and my response is always the same-- "If I can't taste, why am I fat?!". Taste and smell have nothing to do with each other, as I can attest.
Smell is one of the 5 senses. If someone can't see or can't hear, they at least get special accomodation. But someone who can't smell? Ha! No such luck. It can be just as debilitating as any other major loss.
I've had 4 babies, but never got to enjoy that "new baby" smell.
I have to rely on the opinions of others if I want to buy perfume. And God forbid I should forget deoderant on a hot day; I walk around paranoid until I get home!
I spent 17 years of my life living by the Ambrosia Chocolate Factory in Milwaukee, and never ONCE got to smell the wafting cocoa scent.
Gas leak? Raging inferno? Sorry, I'll be dead. I can't smell either one.
In my opinion, those people should sue the poo out of the drug company. That is a HUGE thing to take from someone.
