Guess I'm lucky... Never seen any evidence of tapes in poop, fecals or necropsies.

Moister environment in dawgland. Probably more beetles and slugs over there than here. Flies are a bad vector for them too. I don't feed birds off the ground and keep their water clean. Good yard and coop management is always good prevention. That is the downside of free ranging. There's all sorts of things to pick up. Mine were haggling over a mole cricket earlier. Lots of people claiming they never see worms don't seem to realize Capillaria are microscopic, and Heterakis worms are very small. You need good light to see cecal worms and have excellent eyesight or a magnifying glass.

Plain - ole - ivermectin won't treat tapes, and roundworms are showing resistance to it. For tapes you need something with Praziquantel in it, like Zimectrin Gold or Equimax. For all other worms you need something like Safeguard (fenbendazole) or Valbazen (albendazole).
Sorry, I forgot to add the Gold to my info...I did use the Z Gold stuff. There are definitely tape segments in at least one bird, haven't had time to assess the rest. She's been in isolation for awhile---she's been going downhill recently, losing a lot of weight, sitting a lot, stumbling, eating and eating and eating. At first I thought maybe m. synoviae, but no signs of resp. problems in any of the birds. She's been vaccinated against Mareck's. She's very thin, so I would be able to find swelling if it was internal laying I would think. No sign of bumblefoot. Tried vitamin supplements and electrolytes, waiting on some other supplements that were recommended on another thread. Finally thought to look at her droppings and there they were. Ugh. I'm concerned because it's been a few days and no change in number or appearance. Not what I had expected with the Gold. I hate to wait on this because she's in such bad shape and she's normally one of my best layers. The only other thing I could think of was maybe cancer, but our farm vet just packed up and moved further north (it's getting too urban down here, I guess). Not sure what else I can do at this point except keep her warm and hope for the best. I guess I was wondering if there was any other wormer that would be safe to use with the Gold, but I think I'm seeing that the Gold is really the only thing to use on tapes? Thanks for the information, you guys. I always learn something here!

Also, it was kind of a weird summer here in Vacationland---warmer and wetter than usual, so lots of bugs. Slugs ate pretty much everything in the garden, they were everywhere. Lots and lots and lots of worms---great for fishin', and the birds love them. But just...really buggy.

In your first post, you stated that you only gave her a BB sized amount of z-gold. Increase it to the pea sized amount. You can put it on a small piece of bread and give it to her to eat. Make sure there arnt any other birds around or they will steal the treated piece of bread.

But can I do that now, two days after the initial (too small) dose? Or do I need to wait the recommended time between wormings?
