zucchini

I wish I had some zucchini - down here, it's mangoes all summer! My chicken's faces are BLACK from so much mango juice! They shove their faces in it, then go roll in the dirt. I actually look forward to no more mangoes - I've peeled till I'm ready to drop! We have mango popsicles, dried mango, mango fruit rollups, frozen chunks, mango pie, mango smoothie, etc, etc. Zucchini sounds good! (I'm really not complaining - "Thank you, Lord for all the mangoes, they're a blessing!")

Mine love yellow squash, golden zucchini and green zucchini. I have been letting some of all three get too big on purpose, slice them in half and they hollow them out down to the skin. I end up with squash boats to throw on the compost heap. This year I planted about triple the amount I usually plant, and so far the chickens are keeping up with the excess.

Their favorite, still, is tomatoes. Tomatoes are my favorite garden veggie, and mine are just starting to ripen, so until I get my fill, they haven't had too many yet. I did find a couple of volunteer cherry tomato vines that were ripe yesterday, so I decided they would be for the chickens. I gave them enough to be at least three each, but they would chase another chicken all over trying to take hers, while whole ones were left lying on the ground. Silly chickens!

We don't have them locally, but Kroger sells huge mangos 2 for $1, so I have been getting my fill. My chickens love the peels. Next to tomatoes, mangos are their favorite treat.

You don't make Mango chutney? That's my favorite thing to make with them, besides eat them raw. Then I get to have a lot of chicken curry to go with the mango chutney.

This is my first year of many years gardening that I had not one wasted squash of any kind. My girls just loved any large squash, like those zucchini that go from tiny to 5 pounds over night, sliced open so they could get to the seeds and pulp. All they left was a thin outline of skin. I only have a few squash plants left, so now they are working on watermelons and cantaloupes.

I also planted several kinds of pumpkins and winter squash for them to feast on over the winter. I have about 20 huge spaghetti squash that I can't wait to try out. I know they love spaghetti noodles, but they are low in nutrition, so I was thinking they would love squash that looks like spaghetti, but is actually a healthy veggie, plus they have a lot of seeds, which they love.
