    Surviving Minnesota!

Well the goofy ducks ran like maniacs when I went out there and ended up knocking the poop-balls off themselves. Problem solved. (okay 1 problem solved, still have a frozen horse waterer and the water dish for the ducks/chickens keeps freezing over *sigh*)

Well it's currently -16F so by the time I drag enough water out to fill a tub I imagine it'll be frozen and then I guess I'd be concerned that now they're wet and whatever is going to freeze to them again. If it's not a big deal to wait til Saturday it's supposed to be quite a bit warmer and I...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Okay I will apologize in advance. This is a duck question. My two ducks (who hate me) have been hiding a lot the past couple days. Well I just noticed the reason, they can hardly walk because of the baseball sized frozen poop balls on their rears. Both of them. So do I A. give them and my...

Sexing the Brahma breed, (standard size, Light Brahma)

Looks just like my rooster, surprised you haven't heard him crow yet at this age.

Why are the pretty ones always the jerks?

I will never understand this rooster. If I'm sitting I'm apparently "ok" even more so if I'm sitting and I have grapes. Now if I'm walking, even with treats, then I'm apparently a threat and must be attacked.

Ha! I keep leading them to the dishes I set out but they just ignore me and opt for the bird bath or the dirt I'm trying to grow grass in :/

    Surviving Minnesota!

So I tilled up some dirt in a nice shady spot by the coop and I put out some low dishes of water for the chickens when it was so hot this weekend (101F both days). And what do they do instead?

So far he only has nubs no spurs yet. But anyways I always carry the toddler when the chickens are out. They are the same size as her and even the hens tend to want to see what she’s all about and her eyes are beak level so she’s never free to run when they are out. Not too mention she’s a bit...

    Surviving Minnesota!

So far he’s only attacked (from what I can tell) unprovoked once. The other times a kid was screaming bloody murder at him and running around like an idiot cuz he got looked at (I woulda attacked too). I wonder if he was maybe trying to make a point since I was carrying the toddler? He’s never...

He does his job in that department but if he starts acting like a jerk more than once in a blue moon and attacking me or the kids his options are limited.

    Surviving Minnesota!

So let’s say this rooster of mine is destined for the crockpot. What will happened to the dynamic of my flock? 3 hens. All 4 free range during the day. The roo keeps tabs on them. One tends to wander off on her own. Without a rooster are they going to just fall apart? Or will they figure it out...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Happy Mother's day (a day late). Convinced the husband to get me a couple ducklings for mother's day. He wants a pond anyway so this is an excuse for him I think. So two chocolate runner ducklings added to my chores. And Elizabeth the cat decided to go into labor last night, so far we're + 1...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Ug comedy of errs tonight in the coop. Took the 1 year old and the 3 year old out to put the chickens away. Chickens promptly entered the coop and I dropped some things so I put the baby outside. She’s standing there and I’m fixing the stuff I dropped. Meanwhile the chickens exit the coop. The...
