Predator Wars... Pics of the enemy included

We have foxes and coons in our area and on one of our coops only have chicken wire, two years now and only one loss to a predator and that was a young chicken left out alone. So for us chicken wire has worked wonders. For my neighbors as well. They have had chickens with no run just free range...

    Ohio people w/ meaties.

Oh I am sooo done with this cold wet weather. Man oh man how I long for summer. Our furnace went out, no sweat for us country bumpkins though, I just firing up the wood stove, but night time is no fun if I don't stoke the fire. So I went to Kmart and bought four electric blankets for us all...

We processed for the first time!

Quote: Hey it's me...Carolyn. Just to let you know, I' d be willing to process one with you if you'd like the help the first time. It's messy and a little smelly when you fist open them up to get the guts out but you get used to it and it's not so hard after you get the hang of it.

Does Anybody have a problem with this???

I am one who will cull mean roos. I don't cull the meaner hens until I have a replacement for them, I sell eggs. But I process for meat and the meaties have no more or less value than my others, so mean roos go. Just too much stress and liability. I don't like having any aggressive animals...

??Weird stuff on coop floor..was she bound up?

That sounds like it could have been an ovary. An infection in a chicken is a solid fleshy looking thing too. But with veins it makes me think ovary...OUCH!! Poor thing.

Whitish film on eggs after cleaning - how to avoid this?

I sell my eggs so I need to keep them looking nice. Some of my hens are sleeping in the nesting boxes because of this there is poo in the nesting boxes in the morning. SOme of my hens lay very early, earlier than I get out to change the hay in the nest box, so I end up with some eggs covered...

Chickens carry tons of diseases... (CPS alert!)

CPS has much better things to do than this. For pity sakes. This is a horrible waste of tax payer money. CPS is notorious for going after low income people too. They know if you can't afford an attorney, you cannot defend yourself well. You rarely hear of wealthy people losing their...

    Mysterious Chicken Death... What Happened???

Quote: That is egg peritonitis, there is no cure and most often effects heavy laying breeds like comets. I just finished culling six comets over the last 3 months due to this. It is just so hard on those production breed girls to produce so many eggs. It can happen to other breeds too, but...

Do you eat your own chickens rare?

I absolutely agree about market chicken needing to be fully cooked. I don't know if I could ever truly enjoy a rare chicken, even my own. I am afraid of becoming sick. But this is a new idea to me, and I may work up the nerve one day to try it. On a side note, I bought the cheapest chicken...

Pullets sick with yellow discharge coming out of nose

Quote: I have had many farmers dispute this claim, and some were very educated. So I am torn on believing they will be carriers for life. I just recently culled a hen that had coryza, well the dead animal smelling breath, no culture was done, and I regret it alot. I treated mine herbally with...

Why are they dying?? Very upset! Lost another, new question! HELP!

ChickenPox you did a great job. Illness is like that, sometimes it can "hide" and then suddenly you get full force symptoms. Glad you found the culprit. Good work! Carolyn

Do you eat your own chickens rare?

Thanks for the temp ideas Ahab. I don't hesitate to eat recipes with my eggs in it raw either. I would feel more comfortable eating my chicken meat rare than store bought. Donrae: I don't know of temp. I just read eating them rare is healthier. I know meat cooked at high temps is bad...
