You need a minimum of 6 for a strong flock. Everything they do is the flock as a whole. The Guinea hens are great. They eat mice and small rat's and chase away the adult rat's. They also will eat small snakes and run the others away. Good Luck
If you're having trouble with a hawk you can take a few old CDs tie them to a tree or pen and leave it dangle down so it moves around. Let me know if it works for you as it has worked for me.
I have suggest that you find a few old CDs and hang them around the area of the chickens..Just tie them with a string and let them hang so they can move with the wind. I read this here on this site. I have had a bad problem with wild birds in with my chicken. I did this and it was worked. Good Luck

About the best you can do is what you're doing. If the one dies make sure you bury her deep so other animals won't dig her up. As to the other's about the only thing to do is watch them closely and if you see them starting to become sick get them on antibiotics. We use erythromycin. Good luck
Get some VASELINE and rub it on the area. If that d work in a few days go to the feed store and pick up a can of wonder blue spray. It works wonders. Try the Vaseline first.
She will most likely be okay. If you can get to the feed store and pick up a spray bottle of wonder blue. I have used it for everything from horses to chickens and it is great. It is almost a purple blue color when you spray it on but it works. It also comes in powder to dust onto the wound...
You need to get a baby monitor if you get more and you should be able to hear any ruckus going on inside there when you're sleeping or in the house. They work good.
