Ok, I live in Louisiana, but for the first time I tried not using any water until after day 18,
and had success! I finally got a wet/dry bulb setup and trusted the readings. I noticed that
it would not get below 40-50% even totally dry, due to the humidity always staying between
50-80% outdoors...
I need help. I paired up our best cochin hen with a rooster for a few days, and now all of a sudden,
it looks like her tail feathers are all frayed out. I tried washing her, but it didn't help. We have
another show in about a month. Does anyone know how to remedy this?
I am trying to get an average selling cost of the following:
1. Started chicks
2. 1-6 month olds (future layer or meat bird)
3. Laying hens
4. Show quality birds (4-6 month olds or better)
5. Pet quality (not quite good enough to show, but pretty nice.)
Please comment on whatever you can
Thanks
Here is the first one. Works very well, not crazy about how the roof came out. Built the second floors after it was built
and was a tight squeeze getting in and out. Dimension is 8'x'4' and about 5 1/2 feet tall.
Legs are 4 x 4's about 15" tall.
Floors are plywood covered with vinyl with pine...
Chicks about 3-6 weeks old, intestines coming out right before death or right after.
Other symptoms are diarrhea caking up below vent, and chicks pecking at it.
I looked up infectious bursal disease and it sounds just like it, but there is no mention of
intestines coming out. I'm thinking the...
I just finished one wild ride of a hatching, but with great results!
Two power failures, temperature got down to 90 degrees both times, not sure how long first power failure was,
but second one was 4 hours. About a week apart.
A few hot days later, came home and noticed temp was 104!!!
Turned...
It seems like once my chicks make it past 3-4 days, they're good to go. But I often have some
that are very lethargic and "sleepy", not open their eyes much at all. They usually don't make it
past day 2. I know there are dozens of different illnesses/diseases, but is there a very common
one in...
Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep chickens from digging someplace else other than our landscape?
I know they love the loose sandy soil and mulch, and I've made them a separate "bathing" box with loose dirt in it,
but they run straight to the flower beds when I let them out to roam. I...
My birds are really filthy, I haven't washed them since the shows are over. Should I dust them with
all the other filth on them or wash and dry then dust?
I have seen posters on this board get corrected for using the term "standard" instead of "large fowl"
When would you use each word? I never say large fowl, and its never used at shows that I've been too.
A judge had took points off one of my birds because his 2nd primary feather was broken off about halfway down.
I never had noticed this. Will it grow back or should I pull it and let it grow back?
I just discovered my turner had stopped working! I'm on day 8 now, I think it stopped around day 4 or 5, I did candle them all on day 5.
Is this a critical time for turning? Oh, no!!!
I cracked my eggs open every day up until collection time, and they were all fertile. Now after 6 days, one of my pullets eggs look like
they have good development inside, the other nothing. Can you have fertile eggs and them not "take"? I heard that since they are
young they might not have...
We have 5 ducks in our pond (not sure which kind), and we started spotting eggs here and there on the edge
of the pond, some even under water. Is there something we can build to encourage laying in one spot like a nest
area, a depression, or grassy dry area along the bank? I would like to have...
Man, I'm trying to pair up my cochins for breeding season, but I want to have the right daddy!
I have not been careful enough about who mates with who, and I also had a stray rooster join in a couple weeks ago.
If I incubate now, no telling what I will have. It seems like its taking forever to...
