Thank you for sharing your photos. This is my first winter with chickens and we have gotten about a foot and a half of snow the last two days. Our run is covered and they seem happy & healthy, but still. 20 degrees F must be a bit of a shock for the first time.
Mine have been fine in and out of the coop without heat for far. For reference it's only gotten down to the low 20s here. I'm in Utah, where in Idaho are you?
I found my first White Leghorn egg at 20 weeks on the dot last Tuesday. We've had 6 more since. Very exciting. It looked so perfect I thought my husband had put an egg from the fridge into the nest box as a joke!
I too am very sorry for the loss of your husband and am glad to hear you have relatives near by as well as good friends.
I hope your neighbor has calmed down. I know there are all types of people in this world but if my neighbor's chickens/game birds wandered across the street & into my yard I...
That's what I've read on BYC and have decided to do that. The folks at the feed store insisted layer feed was fine for my 11 week old hens but I decided to go with advice from here. Good luck!
Congrats!!
I'm new to chickens but I can't imagine you're doing anything wrong. I'd imagine if you were doing anything wrong they wouldn't be laying or they'd all be dead. Looks good to me!
Look what I found!

(I don't live in PA but it's slow at work, not much to do!)
I just looked on here http://www.laureldaleboro.org/ (I did a search for "chickens" on the site) and it's pretty vague! It doesn't say you can't have them, but it also doesn't say how many you can have if at all.
I'd call the city. Good luck and keep us updated!
Isn't BYC great? My neighbors have made fun of me from learning things "from the internets" but really it has been extremely helpful. BYC + my Storey book = five happy & healthy 11 week old pullets.
(Storey book: http://www.amazon.com/Country-Wisdom-Almanac-Know-how-Everything/dp/1579123686)...
I'd like to second this. I approach fairly slowly, call out in a calm, soft voice, and gently shake the pitcher of scratch grains. Sometimes I'll even approach indirectly (like in a circle).
It has helped.
Full disclaimer: these are my first chickens and they are 10 weeks old.
