    How to tell breeds

Haha! Yep, the hatchery catalogs were my favorite thing for a looong time. I'd bring those things almost everywhere.

Neighbor hates my chickens- will she do them harm?

I'm so glad you have a place to get away to. I think that it helps us to appreciate little things even when our life is crazy.

"Oh I would have never guess that, sorry for the bother and thanks so much!"

When you have chicks around, who needs TV? They are so entertaining! My girls only like me for the food. Haha!

"Oh I would have never guess that, sorry for the bother and thanks so much!"

Haha! I'm glad they are fine! There are a lot of stories on here about new owners finding out that some things are natural, the hard way. I found out that chickens have different personalities the fun way! I originally thought all chickens were stupid and they were all the same. Well, at least...

My 2 1/2 month hen's motherly instint kicked in. How young can a hen be to go broody ?

Agree. That face is way too red. I think he is being protective in his own way. The chicks are adorable though! :)

Neighbor hates my chickens- will she do them harm?

Yah, I know what you mean about that sick smell after a big fire. Our garage burnt down the summer before last, and it was connected to our house. That was the most terrifying experience of my life. There was countless tools, wood, paint, camping stuff, clothes, and whatever else was in there...

Why are my 9 month old pullets losing feathers?

I think they will be all right. I mean, you should keep an eye on them, but they should be fine for the most part. I've read that if you give them a little more protein, that they will grow back their feathers quicker. You might have to find something to confirm it.

What do you grow in your garden?

Here are our beds when we first put them in a few years ago. Looking towards the raspberries. Developing raspberries. (and a bee) Chive flowers and a bee. And we have countless other flowers throughout our yard and garden.

What do you grow in your garden?

We have raspberries, loganberries?, 2 apple trees, 2 peach trees, and 2 cherry trees. The raspberries are pretty much a mess, but they are really good and it's fun to have friends over to pick them. The loganberries are at the bottom of the garden but we never really liked them so the will...

Neighbor hates my chickens- will she do them harm?

I believe I read that Buckeye chickens are good at catching mice, I'm not sure about rats. Is that a good enough excuse to get more chickens?

Neighbor hates my chickens- will she do them harm?

TheSitcomGirls, thank you for telling us your stories. It has been quite the roller-coaster. I'm so glad that you are able to keep Spock and Warren and get those cute goats! Don't let the people who were doubting you get you down. I advise people who go on the internet to be skeptical. Anything...

7 week old EE sexing guesses?

I agree, they seem like they are all pullets for now. And thank you for including Max as a comparison. :)

Is something wrong with this chick?

Welcome to Back Yard Chickens! My first thought is a possible rooster, because of the difference in size and difference in feathers. Just the first thing that popped into my head. Another thought is maybe it is not digesting food properly, like maybe it doesn't have all the enzymes to break down...

    chicks or chickens

Again I warn you about how dangerous it can be to have a dog around chicks or chickens. With that in mind, I would recommend getting chicks. If you were to get grown chickens, they would likely already be afraid of dogs and will run away from the dog and snap! your dog's instinct is to go chase...

    conjoined hatchling - urgent advice!!

Hatching a double yolker is probably not the best idea. They usually need help hatching and sometimes they need to hatch at different times from each other. They will likely be pretty small because of the shared space and will be more fragile and easier to pick on. Also, if one of the sides quit...
