The Svart Hona (Swedish Black Hen) Thread!

Is this little one a Svart Hona? 9 weeks old today. If it is, what do I look for to tell hen or roo since the comb and waddles are black?

Yes, his comb is black and his little waddle bumps are too. I call them bumps because that's all they are right now, they haven't started to drop.

I'll get a new photo tomorrow. Tonight I was surprised when I went in the hen house at bedtime to count and collect the ice bowls...the little one that I'm trying to figure out i a cockerel or not had managed to fly up between the pen and wall, then while I was staring at the situation trying to...

Update...the comb and waddles haven't changed but I'm starting to see iridescent “leakage” of color. So maybe it's a slow developing cockerel.

I just checked and his skin is darker than the other siblings. The breeder I got them from does breed Svarthona.

I bought 4 straight run chicks...turns out 1 pullet and 3 cockerels. I suspected as much when the first 2 cockerels became apparent so I went back to the breeder and bought 4 more straight run chicks. This second set of chicks is 4 weeks younger than the first set. As soon as the younger ones...

Thanks so much, not what I was hoping for. I'm too close to the neighbors for a roo. Guess I'll put together a Rehoming ad.

Here are the same chicks I posted about a few weeks ago. Now they are 5 weeks. #1 and #4 definitely look like roos to me. #2 looks like a hen. #3 I'm not sure ... could be a roo. What do you think?

My first time having Isbar chicks. They are 3 weeks old yesterday. I think #1 and #3 may be roos. What do you think? (had to send from my laptop, not my phone, to get the photo to load)

Chicken Breed Focus - Isbar (Blue Isbar)

I have my first set of isbar chicks. They will be 3 weeks old this coming weekend. How do you know at this age if they are cockerel or pullet?
