    Sick Buff Orpington hen

Crop is empty, she drinks and eats, but doesn't seem like a lot. She's never been wormed, I looked for lice and mites, looks clean. None of the other hens seems to be affected.

    Sick hen

I checked her crop and it seems fine. I've never wormed the flock, not even sure how to do that or how often. I looked at her eye for injury or debris and can't see anything. I will get some eye drops a flush her eye.

    Sick Buff Orpington hen

I have a one year old hen, a few days ago I noticed she was off by herself, in the middle of the day on the outside perch. I approached and started talking to her, she had her head tucked and seemed asleep, deep sleep. I touched her and scared the crap out of her, I guess she woke up. She...

    5 month old Buff Orpingtons

I have 4 Buff Orpingtons about five months old. I have two that have large combs and waddles that are deep red. One has changed its behavior recently and always comes out to meet me when I go to the coop. The other is still mild mannered and submissive. I'm trying to figure out if I have a...

    Multiple hens in nest boxes

I have a flock of 13 layers, I have 6 nest boxes, every once in awhile when I go out to check the boxes I will find 2 or sometimes three hens in a box. Is there some reason for this? From what I read you can allow for up to 1 nest box per 4 hens, my ratio is 3:1. The other odd thing is that 2...

    Special concerns for Brahmas

I've checked around and they aren't laying and hiding eggs. I bought a chicken coop with what I guess are standard size nest boxes and the roost bars in front, six boxes, three on three.. The hen that laid the one egg did so in the lower row, but the nest boxes all look like a hen has been...

    Food consumption

Our chicks are 8 weeks old, I have been filling up the feeder whenever it gets low. My question is this, should I just give them a set amount each day and when its gone it's gone, or keep the feeder full and let them graze at it?

    Need for heat lamp

Well thanks for all the help and suggestions on this thread. What I have noticed about my chicks, is they seem to make their own decisions. I have kept the heat lamp on in the coop, opened the pop door and I let them decide. I have 17 chicks, 14 seem to go out in the yard and spend most of...

    Need for heat lamp

I love Wilmington, I was stationed at New River Air Station, miss the Carolinas. From what I have been reading, the book recommends you keep it on 24/7 until they feather out. In Kansas it's been in the high 80's. low 90's and I have been turning it off during the day and back on at night, but...

    Need for heat lamp

I have two week old Brahmas, I just moved them into the coop. Last night I had the heat lamp on, but it was in the high 80's today and only supposed to get down to 74 tonight. Should I still leave the heat lamp on? It has been about 80-85 in the garage since I brought them home. I turned the...
