looking for someone to care for my chickens over the holidays.

try dog walkers/pet sitters The lady who boards our dogs and watches our cats when we're gone also takes care of the chickens. She'd never done it before us but she enjoys it now.

    Immaculate conception?

I thought fertility was shown by a bulls eye on the yolk. My non-rooster hens lay eggs with a red spot too.

It's so beautiful! First EE egg pic

Nope - you never get over that feeling!

Visiting Rooster - what to do?

Are people worried about him bringing disease to your flock since you can't quarantine him? I would think he belongs to someone or someone dumped him. Happens a lot. Poor guy. He probably heard your girls and wanted to come check them out for himself. I'm all for feeding him (but not claiming...

Big Boy sounded his warning because... <Pics>

    my first roo question

I had an EE roo (rehomed him) and he wouldn't shut up. Crowed starting at 4am and didn't slow down till after lunch. Was just the way he was.

    Gardening with chickens

Mine never ate my penstemon. Of course I have now built them a completely separate chicken run so they can't get to the backyard any more.

All 3 'girls' were accidental roosters...how did this slip by me?

For those of us with small backyard flocks/pet chickens it's SO sad to get an accidental roo (I got one this year) and I can't imagine getting 3 - I'd be pretty darn upset. Especially after all the effort and affection that goes into raising them! That said, I think you should give it another...

Do Dogs and Chickens EVER mix??

I have two dogs. An older (13 years) husky/pitbull/lab mix and a 4 year old labradoodle. They both are AWESOME with the chickens. The older dog has been nose to nose many times and never had any issues, never was aggressive, nada. My younger dog is actually intimidated by the chickens. I've...

    Dang Dog

She's in shock. I would bring her inside where it's warm. If you have a large dog crate I'd set it up for her (we set ours up in the breakfast room when we have a hen that needs caring for). Animals in shock need warmth, quiet and to be kept safe. I would bring her inside, check for wounds...

    Another close call

With the economy the way it is people are often just dumping their animals or leaving them in houses they vacate. It's horribly sad and a HUGE problem for shelters around the country. If you fed him and were kind to him, he may come back. I have an outdoor cat who was an abandoned cat who is...

My EE tried to escape today! (with pics)

Those pics were hilarious!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your EE is a lovely girl indeed and those are some intense pictures. The very color-rich. I think she knew she looked good next to the scarecrow - he showed off her colors well.

There should be a *RANT* section

Yup been there done that so I built a run with a 7 foot tall fence and loads of bark for them to scratch through and they've shown no desire to hop the fence. So far. Though they do look at my new plants and sort of lick their lips.....if they had lips.

You might be a crazy chicken lady/gent if...Go on, post yours!

When you spend a ridiculous sum of money to have a fence built from the coop to the side of the house/rose garden so the hens will have an area to free range since the back yard is now off limits. The fence guys thought I was CRAZY to be creating such a fancy chicken run (but were happy for the...

    Do I need DE?

My girls have free range access to a run we built in our rose garden. It has roses (well what's left of the roses), redwood bark and dirt and lots and lots of wild birds. I'm getting more than I ever did from my bird feeder. My question - I know wild birds can carry mites and lice and I'm...

Anyone get Easter Egger's from Meyers Hatchery?

My EE didn't lay until she was over 26 weeks old. But neither did my BPR.

What to look for when rehoming a rooster - Decision Made!

Thanks guys! Another hen (or two) is definitely in the cards. No more roos! I don't know what I will do if one of my chicks ends up as a roo again. My neighbor had the same issue this year with chicks she bought. It seems to be a bad year for it.
