Anyone have experience making homemade fish meal?

I definitely want to find a way to preserve it so it will keep for a while. I'm talking about a lot of fish carcasses here, rock fish, salmon, halibut, ling cod, etc. They would easily rot before my birds could pick them clean. (I also don't want to feed the neighborhood pests, dogs, etc.) I...

    Mallard question... eggs/broody

Chances are pretty good. You can always candle the eggs after a week or so to be sure.

How Often Should You Feed Your Flock?

Chickens will eat more than they need to if you let them. I free range mine and feed them twice a day, morning and evening. Feeding them more just seems like more chicken poop to deal with.

Anyone have experience making homemade fish meal?

I live on the coast and a lot of my family are avid fishermen. Rather then just burying the carcasses I was thinking of trying to process them to feed back to my chickens. Anyone done this?

Why soy free?? (And the effects of soy)

Quote: You can't really be serious. Do you know that the corn, wheat, oats, barley and every other cash crop gets sprayed too??? The oranges, apples, bananas...... Organic grains are a different matter but who can afford that? In all honesty, I don't even think my grain mill could get me...

    Domesticated mallards

In my experience they do "pair up" in that the drake has a favorite who captures most of his attention. However, this doesn't stop him from making the rounds with the other girls now and then.

Why soy free?? (And the effects of soy)

Ever heard of round-up ready soybeans? They've been geneticaly modified to tolerate high levels of round-up, the over the counter weed killer. They spray the whole crop 2-3 times throughout the season so there are no weeds to compete with the soybeans resulting in a more cost effective operation...

    New to Raising Ducks

They only need enough water to rinse their nostrils, but a small plastic wading pool would be better for bathing, breeding, etc. They can eat chicken feed but do better on flock raiser or something with a higher protien content (especially if they can't free range.) You can keep them in a pen...

    The Agony of Vacations....

Another option would be to hire a responsible house sitter. I used to make quite a bit of extra money doing this.

    2 roos + 16 hens = trouble?

If they were raised together you have a good chance they will be fine. Also, you have a good ratio of roos to hens so that is working in your favor as well. Good luck!

    Eureka California Earthquake ....

Quote: ...Hurricanes give you a couple days choice! Stay or pack and go North to a hotel. Tornadoes and Quakes are not that nice. There are some pretty tall trees around my house, hurricane force winds would scare me way more than a little ole earthquake. Heck, I think they're kinda fun...

    Eureka California Earthquake ....

Oh yeah, it was a good one. We were only 20 or 30 miles from the epicenter so we got shaken up pretty good. Not really that bad though if you compare it to some we've had in the past. 6.5 is scary but earthquakes get exponentialy worse as the numbers get higher. Once you get into the 7.0 range...

We Have A Duck In Pain ;-(

If he's still getting around, eating well, and not being picked on I would just let him be, he might get better in a few weeks. I've had birds develop a limp and recover more than once. You could also try keeping him in a smaller pen for a few days to give his leg a rest. I've also heard many...

    Porcelin eggs missing

Or maybe a hen decided she didn't like the fake eggs in the nest and scratched them onto the floor. Mine do this and they get covered in straw making them hard to find.
