    Chilled chick question

Hello, all! I'm not a newbie, and I have a question for those of you who have been through this before: 2 day old baby chick got away from the hen and got very cold. It was found on its back. We brought it inside and put it on a heating pad in one of those clear pet enclosures, so the temp is...

    Silkies with cataracts/glaucoma

Last year, I had one of my Silkies go completely blind from what looked like a combination of glaucoma/cataracts. We had her put to sleep as the condition looked extremely painful. This year, I am looking at one of my one year old Silkies and her eye is swollen and starting to get a blue...

Possibility of chronic Fowl Cholera...how to deal with it in a home flock

I have 2 hens with eye issues right now. One has severe periorbital edema, the other has hypopyon (pus inside eye). Based on those findings, plus the fact that I had a layer about 3 years ago who came down with severe wattle edema, it finally has hit home that I may be dealing with chronic fowl...

Anyone else have a clean legged SG?

I had the funniest thing hatch! Father is SG, mother was either silkie or SG. Absolutely no leg feathering, but nice silkie feathering. I am calling it "Oddball". Comb/wattles are very red, legs are black. Just wondered if anyone else has a little 'Oddball' out there. Hope I can...

    Texas Silkies/SGs

I would like to get in touch with another TX Silkie/SG breeder. I will need some new birds to add to my existing flock later in the year, and would like to establish a relationship with another breeder. Looking for show quality stock, please. I've been 'playing around' with my flock, but now...

FYI: Crows can and will attack baby chicks

Just a word of warning to you all: Last week, we were experiencing predation problems with our small mixed flock of broilers and Silkie chicks. Broilers were 7 weeks old, Silkies about 3 months. They were free-range only during the day and put up at dusk. I found a dead Silkie and then a...

Any clue to this Silkie's/SG's genetics?

I really, really need to learn chicken color genetics! But since I don't know them well at all, here goes: I have a white SG roo. His "ladies" are currently other whites, partridge, and buffs. Most of the SG chicks are white, some are white with the striping on the rump at birth (center...

Goose hatched duck egg today...and now what?

Well this is only my second 'natural' incubation experience with poultry. My African goose hatched out a duck egg today. Duckling is drying nicely and should be fully fluffed out by tomorrow. (It was a bit of a 'sticky chick', so I did gently 'brush' the feathers with a soft toothbrush a bit...

    'Showgirl' genetics...please advise

I just received a white Showgirl roo yesterday. Black neck, bearded, 5 toed, turquoise lobes...the whole she-bang. Now, how do I create more Showgirls? I know nothing about Showgirl genetics, i.e. if Na is dominant, co-dominant, recessive, etc. Thanks for any info!

    Breeding a Frazzle?

I believe that I may have a Frazzle on my hands after reading about them. She FINALLY molted (the first time in over a year) and looks great right now, but before she had the naked neck/crunchy primary wing feather thing going on. Poor thing was the ugliest little bird you'd ever seen. I am...

Best place (online) to purchase avian pox vaccine?

Hello all! well, my flock finally came down with something...pox. Ugh. What a headache! I only lost 2 roos to 'wet' pox, but all hens are fine and healing up nicely. Going to be adding birds this spring, so I want some pox vaccine on hand. Where do you purchase your poultry vaccs? And...

The story of Wayward Jones, the Polish hen

I just posted a new entry on my blog about our young, always lost, hen, Wayward Jones. I thought you all may get a kick out of it. Especially those of you who have raised Polish. This is in NO WAY spam! I do not make any profit off of my blog (I wish!), but I thought you would enjoy another...

    Complicated post of the day....

Ok, here goes... I have 3 eggs that are SUPPOSED to hatch tomorrow under a broody. This will be my first broody hen to hatch chicks in my current flock. Wondering if I need to separate mom and babies as soon as they are dry. I plan on shutting all the other hens out of the coop first thing...

    Mites AND lice...ugh

Was collecting eggs today, and pulled out an egg....and my hand came back with several critters on it. Mites! Yuck. Checked the hens and sure enough, it's mites AND lice. I swear, it's like they just materialized overnight! Think I'll treat with Eprinex. Anyone else? Comments? I read...

Warning: Adding fan to LG killed my bator! Anyone else?

We added the 7200 fan to my LG 9200 bator. As you may know, the fan has these junky little clips that slice through the insulation on the power cord, to meet the wire. Anyway, we did that, I plugged it in, everything was going great (fan is running, heat is going) and then.......not 5 minutes...

Anyone ever upgraded the thermostat in their LG?

Just wondering...I am thinking about ditching the junky thermostat/rheostat in my LG 9200...replace it with a hot water heater therm/rheo. Anyone else tried this? Seems like the biggest problem with the LGs is the temp spikes due to the cheapo thermostat.

Humidity under brooding hen....thought you'd like to hear this!

Ok, so for scientific purposes, I stuck my hygrometer probe under my brooding Cochin. Humidity was 60%. Just thought this was interesting info. :0)

    Sticky chicks....

Well, since now I have determined my temps were too low for most of the incubation, I have some slightly still sticky chicks after almost a day. Not too terribly bad, though, but they do need to be fluffed a bit when I move them into the brooder, mainly on their rumps. Any tips for getting the...
