I have a question about this. I have heard that if you don't refrigerate your eggs that they won't go bad....is this true? should I still rinse them first?
We just put up a four inch high separation from the main part of the coop and my clever girls did what chickens do and made themselves a nest. At first we were vigilant about "egg hunting" the back yard in case there was a hidden nest somewhere. Once I noticed that Noodle, (my sweet Orpington )...
After learning my lesson the hard way,I highly recommend that you build your own chicken coop/house. If you buy online you are going to spend a zillion dollars on one that is actually what you need, or you are going to buy one that ends up being way to small, and poorly made.
I paid about $200...
Also I think I should mention that we also built them a bigger hen house. Once they had enough space, and were no longer being drenched by trillions of gallons of water they started laying. My Barred Rock, "Betty", even gave us a post hurricane gift! Her second or third egg was double yoked! And...
My girls slept in the nesting boxes for ages. Once they were about 5 months I put them on the roost, (perch), but at night. I guess chickens can't see at night. So they would stay there. I did this for about 3 nights, and they figured out that that is where they sleep.
Good luck!

TRUTH! I went about it all backwards. Ended up having to build an entire new coop. We aren't done with the run yet. You WANT a door to your run...I promise that you do. And make sure that the run is tall enough for you to stand on your feet while cleaning or adding new features to your run...
I agree. My first coop was supposed to be big enough for 3 chickens. NOPE! We doubled the size, especially the height so that the girls didn't end up sleeping on the floor anymore,(which I am assuming was because it was just too small in there).
Take "chicken math" throw it out of the window...
I also "watched the pot" for ages. Finally had a hurricane, (amazing to watch chickens natural instincts!). Once Harvey finally left, I was too busy with post-hurricane stuff, ( luckily we did not flood), and all of a sudden when I went to clean the coop, there was a tiny little brown egg!! A...
You are AWESOME!!:wee These ideas are great for keeping it "simple". Right now my girls are in a prefab house and we extended the run. But now that they are almost full grown the coop is WAY to small! They sleep in the nesting box or on the floor. I really can't build a roost off much higher...
My coop is very small, and the girls are sleeping in the nesting boxes. I was also thinking about putting some boxes in the run. My girls usually free range around my yard from 10am until dusk, when they just put themselves to bed.
I know that they are getting close to laying and I have to...
Does it matter if they sleep on the floor? I just need to stop them from sleeping in the nesting boxes! But egg time is getting close!! I'm afraid that is I cover the nesting boxes and they are about to start laying..... well then what!!!!
I love your run. Do your chickens stay in the run, or do they get free range time?
We have a large yard and I am letting them range most of the day right now, but I am getting sick of stepping in chicken poop all day!!!!
