It's funny now, but it wasn't that night... I was startled out of a deep, relaxing sleep to hear the piercing clucks and screeching sounds coming from the chicken house. I ran out butt naked, with flashlight in hand afraid to look what was happening!!! I shined the light combing every nook...
Does anyone else have experience with a sand floor in the coop? I have a sand box my son had that we are turning into a coop/nesting area and was wondering if the sand would work?
My broody hen hatched 1 little eggie in the community chicken coop. The nest box was about 2 ft. off the ground and I had closed the doors on the henhouse to keep the other chickens away from the broody and her baby. I came home from work and found the little chick on the ground with the mama...
DEE88 SAYS "IT'S EASY TO BE OBSESSED..."
WITH CHICKENS, I READ A MESSAGE HERE ON BYC AND IT WAS SO TRUE, IT SAID "IF YOU HAVE LAWN CHAIRS SET UP INSIDE OF YOUR CHICKEN COOP, THEN YOU'RE OBSESSED!!! WELL, I DO, AND I AM! MY 9 YEAR OLD SON LIKES OUR 5 PULLETS TOO!!! WE GO OUT TO OPEN THE...
I'll check the rooster's comb again, I bet that's it! Poor guy, it looks brownish/black instead of red...I didn't get very, very close. We just have had the rooster for about a month and I've heard stories about roosters attacking. He has been nice because I've stayed out of his way. Should...
I noticed quite a few blood splatters/specks in the coop but I can't see a problem with any of the chickens. No blood in their poop or anything (that I can see). They all seem okay (eating, walking around) but there are several blood splatters up on the roost area and some in the nesting boxes...
My RIR does the same thing. Sings the chicken song for about an hour, then goes to the nesting box and sits there for about 30 minutes! I guess they're all different but that seems normal to me (considering my chicken does it too)
I've notice my RIR gets antsy before she lays her egg; she'll walk around pretty fast, and darts behind doors and in the corners of the coop, all the time singing the egg song. (bawk bawk baaaaaaaaaaaawk, bawwwwwwwk, bawk, bawk) She sounds like our frogs in our pond, kind of of a deep bawk...
It's so fun, isn't it? My RIR just started laying last week and today I got the 1st egg laid in the nesting box. It's been on the floor before today! I still have 4 chickens not laying.
Congratulations!
Every chicken matures differently, even within the same clutch, An average age for most chickens to lay would be around 20 weeks old but this can vary a LOT, like even 29-30 weeks! Once the hens start doing the egg "squat" (you'll know when you try to pet her) it is usually about a week from...
My new egg layer, Helen Reddy laid her 5th egg today! But this time it wasn't on the floor, or behind the door! She laid it in the nesting box for the 1st time. What a good little chickie!!! I think she gets a treat! I had read on here when it looks like she's going to lay an egg, put her...
IMO, Your chickens look younger than 7 mos. They look about 17-20 wks. old and that's when about the time they start laying. I would give it a few more weeks. How many chickens did the lady you got them from have? I think she may have made a mistake!
