You could carbon dioxide it. Put the egg in a large bowl next to a smaller container of baking soda and vinegar. The CO2 is dense and will fill up the bottom of the bowl. Oxygen deprivation will kill the chick. Not too bad of a way to go, I guess. Better than the microwave. *shudder*
I'm so glad you tried again with this batch of eggs and that they are doing so well. I surely didn't want this experiment to end on a sad note. I couldn't agree more about the miracle of egg design and development. The more I learn about how things work and all the pieces that have to come...
So sad for you and your mom, and Hootie of course. Makes me more grateful for those nothing new, nothing happening days and to count your blessings, even on the boring uneventful days.
Hope your back feels better soon. I feel your pain. Literally.
Bee, Hootie is looker. So sorry for the two that died, but I don't think you should beat yourself up too much (a little maybe, because it proves you have a big heart and shows your appreciation for the gift of life.). I too am uncomfortable when people are callous about death.
Remember...
Aliza Grace is perfectly beautiful with a name to match. You and your family have indeed been blessed.
Glad the eggs got to stay safe at home. It's hard not to get antsy waiting for them to hatch. We're all waiting with you.
Your first grandchild!!! I may sound like a traitor to the hatching project, but I would leave them at home so they would not be a distraction to the birth of your grandbaby. But then, I would probably be thinking about chicks stuck in eggs all day. Decisions... decisions... If you don't...
Such good news about the 3 eggs! So happy this is working for you (and all of us, really). Keeping your little chicks in my thoughts and anticipating an exciting hatch day.
An aside: I've read that the humidity will naturally rise in an incubator when the pips occur. Keeps everyone from...
Bee, bet you had a rougher night than those almost-chicks! So glad to hear that one is still moving; it bodes well for the others. Still rooting for them!
Wondering if the age of the embryo matters with temp spikes and dips. I would think they would be much more fragile in the first...
Interesting. Just saw this on another thread. Brinsea developed a contact incubator to mimic a broody hen. Bee, yours is about $5,980 cheaper!

They mention some studies on broody nests.
That must be so cool to see! Little everyday miracles, growing from a single cell to a fully formed critter in only 3 weeks. I am always in awe.

This was going to be my next topic/question. Eggs lay on their side with a broody, but seems most are stood on end to hatch in an...
This is so interesting and explains the behaviors I saw in broody hens when I was a girl. Watched the hen touch an egg with her beak and start to move it, then stop and choose the next one over to move to the center of the clutch. To me it seemed random, or that one egg was just in a better...
