Depending on what breed they are, pullets hatched this past spring should lay all winter as long as they have good food and thawed water. Extra light also helps, but I have never needed it for 1st year layers. Hope everyone has a great Christmas.

I did the NYD hatch last year, I hatched out about 100 chicks, I sold most of them. But not doing it this year. My coop is not warm enough for baby chicks and having a bunch of chickens in my basement till April/May was not my idea of fun. It did get warm enough here today to open my pop doors...

My girls have been getting some treats the last few days also. I boiled up some old deer meat, a dozen of older eggs, some oatmeal, and mixed in a little left over calf milk replacer. I heat it up a little and take it out to them about an hour before the lights go out. I don't heat my coop, but...

I did go a head and open the pop doors today. There was no wind and we even had a little sun, I did see a few of the girls out for a bit, but my coop is big enough that I can keep them locked up for several days without them feeling cramped. Tommorow and Fri I'm not going to open the coop, I...

Hope everyone is staying safe and warm during this winter storm. I stayed home from work today, got up at my normal 4am let the dog and saw the 2' drift around the front of the house and thought to heck with that and went beck to bed. I don't think I'll be opening the coop for the rest of the...

I got about 6" of snow over Turs. night/Fri morning, and have locked every one up early the last few days. Some of the girls were not to happy about it, and had to chase them in and shut the door on them. I feed ablout 5 when I get home from work and then go back out about dark to shut the...

I think a lot of the problems are when there is only one rooster. I have several and none are nasty, but then I breed for temperment and would cull any one of them at the first sign of human agression. I just will not put up with a nasty rooster. I never let them mount a hen near me, and I never...

If your hens are getting over used by the roosters and ending up with broken feathers and bare backs the aprons help protect their backs so the feathers can grow back and it keeps their backs from getting cut up from the roosters spurs.

Doug, I'm very sorry for whatyou are going through right now, that has to be hard with young kids. I would say she is just trying to stir up trouble. but you could have a friend come over and take a smell around the house. If you have a female friend or co-worker that is not friends with your...

I've actually found that LegHorns tend to walk that way. I think that with their huge combs they don't see well on the side that the comb hangs over so its their way of coping with only seeing well out of one eye. If she has been that way for as long as you have had her I wouldn't worry about it.

RoyalT, I'm so sorry about the loss of your calf, its so hard to see them sick and you try so hard to save them. On an interesting note, I just found out that most more reasonable hair extensions are made from Yak hair. I finally have a day off, Yea!!, the 1st in almost 6 weeks. I'm having lunch...

Hi everyone, and welcome to all the new folks. I've been busy trying to get haying done so haven't been on line much the last few weeks. I've had a bobcat hanging around that thinks she would like some chicken dinner, must be tired of wild turkey every day Ha Ha. I've just been letting my dog...

I've used small dog crates, the plastic kind, and also the covered cat litter boxes work great. I just put straw or shavings in them and the girls go right in.

Some people say to put golf balls in the nest boxes to get the girls laying in them, but that has never worked for me, they just kick the golf balls out. Maybe because the're white so they know the're not really eggs?? I have a few that lay on the floor in a corner also. and one that lays...
